Title: Feet First 2009
Location:
Categories: Education

Status: In Progress
Timeline: February 1 09 to December 20 09

Description:
The Feet First Walk to School Every Week action project encourages primary school students to walk to school with a caregiver, friend, or organised walking group at least once a week, every week, during term time.

Some excellent curriculum content -www.feetfirst.govt.nz/curriculum - has been developed for teachers to draw from which discuss walking in relation to safety, exploring, creativity, and saving the planet! There are great prizes up for grabs for schools taking part.

Background:
Feet First began in New Zealand in 2006, when a trial walk to school project was held with 102 schools in Auckland, Tauranga, Nelson and Dunedin. The event was led by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), in partnership with Land Transport New Zealand and Sanitarium Health Foods.

Successful Feet First 'Walk to School Weeks' were subsequently held in 2007 and 2008.

In 2009 the project has expanded to run for the entire academic year. To encourage more long-term engagement curriculum resources have been developed so teachers can explore the wider issues around walking such as urban design, community development or the environment.

Objectives:
The 2009 approach is around encouraging learning opportunities and supporting safe walking. The goal is to get students and caregivers to walk more often, long term.

The benefits of children getting to school using ‘active transport’ are significant. More children walking to school means:
*better levels of fitness and health
*less money spent on petrol *reduced energy use and fewer vehicle emissions
*less congestion at the school gate
*more social interaction for children, their families and whānau.

While walking, children are also learning sustainable transport habits for the future.

Milestones:
Schools are encouraged to use the curriculum resources and interactive website to explore and report on walking in their local area.

There are a variety of incentives to encourage schools to take part such as book and sports vouchers. There is also the opportunity for one school to win the chance to publish their own story/picture book in Term 4.

The ongoing walking numbers and engagement of schools in New Zealand is the main goal.

Needs:
Schools to register and take part in the project.
