A Word From The Director Of POGRE`EDU Initiative Uganda.
POGRE`EDU Initiative Uganda is a community based project aimed at reducing the plight of poverty among widows and orphans in the slums if Kampala.
It’s our utmost commitment to see that the levels of poverty among widows and orphans in the slums of Kampala so as to reduce the risks that arise from living with poverty for such vulnerable communities. The risk range from increase levels of prostitution among young aged girls, Increase in the number of school dropouts, Increased child mortality rates, Increased crime rates, Rampant spread of HIV, Unwanted pregnancies, Child malnutrition, Slow development growth of the country, and so many other issues.
But we believe that we can reverse the process by doing a favor to nature. We strongly believe that with improved income for these communities, less and less occurrences of the above mentioned horrors will be heard off. We have the channels and experience necessary to reach out and make a difference. We believe that with the experience of living in slums and living with single parents we are clearer about the issues affecting these people.
Green initiatives are key in our eradication of poverty, considering the fact that global warming is a reality and the effects are already being felt in Africa and the entire world. The spread of the Sahara southwards will only make the dire food shortage crisis even worse, considering that most African families are subsistent growers. Majority are widows especially in war ravaged south of the Sahara, e.g. South Sudan, Northern Uganda, Central African republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda and many others. Such a scare of the spread of the Sahara and the effects that it would have on African rural dwellers, especially widows and orphans with small farming land, considering that they loss almost everything i.e. land, to relatives when they loss their parents incase of orphans or Husbands in case of widows. This lingering reality is what faces Africa as a whole if developed countries do not do anything about there carbon emissions, and also developing countries take the lead in ensuring food security, educating farmers about proper farming methods, Investing more in the agricultural sector, and also every responsible human being realizing that he has the responsibility to take care of the planet and to act in a wise way to have a Green living and what better way to do that but to support pogre`edu Uganda in its efforts.

Background:
POGRE`EDU Initiative Uganda is a youth led project, and its roots can be traced from the slums of soweto in Kampala. The leading youths and members of the organization all have lived or have lived in the slums at one point in their lives either as orphans or with their mothers that happen to be widows. Therefore Pogre`edu esteeems itself for knowing the issues affecting widows and orphans in slums better than any other organization.
Objectives:
• To work with local governments, civic organizations, national institutions, international institutions and individuals to promote the observance of orphans and widows rights in Uganda.
• To promote awareness on the plight of poverty on neglected widows and orphans in the slums of Kampala.
• To advocate for the rights and dignity of orphans and widows living in difficult circumstances.
• To lobby international organizations, local and international NGOs, Donors, Governments and Prominent individuals to support all orphans and widows related activities to enable orphans enjoy their rights as children and widows to maximize their potential.
• To educate the world about the challenges faced by orphans and widows in slums.
• Establish categories of orphans and widows living in slums and design appropriate intervention methods to help them.
Milestones:
What i believe will is our biggest milestone since start of operations is when we we received memberships of upto 100 widows and orphans. I believe that even helping one orphan or one family being run by a widow is very grateful, so for us to be able to reach 100 was a big milestone for us.
Although this does not mean that we stop at 100, so now our efforts are aimed at ensuring that in the next three years we can reach atleast 350 in all the slums around kampala. And we also believe that in the next 5 years we will arrive at what will be out biggest milestone to be- reaching out to all 5 main capital cities in east africa, this includes; Nairobi, Daresalaam, Kigali, bujumbura and our headquaterws in kampala.
With this; i want to encourage you all to support us in our efforts, that we may reach the consumation of our goal.
Budget:
POGRE`EDU Initiative Uganda runs on a very low budget of around 20 million ugandan shillings a month. POGRE`EDU finances its own budget from charging small commisions on the green products that are sold. The funds received from the commision are used to reach out to other slums and creat a savings fund for the widows and orphans selling their products.
Donations are minimal yet we believe that for us to arrive at our goal more and more people need to start donating, that they may act as a catalyst in our efforts to reach more families in East Africa.
We strongly hope that you will co-operate with us and stand with us as we aim for this goal.
Needs:
POGRE`EDU Initiative Uganda just like many other community-based organizaitons in Africa, is in the need for co-operations with other organizations around the world to share ideas and offer support where we may fail. For the case of POGRE`EDU Initiative Uganda, the lack of enough partners and willing volunteers in other countries to help us sell some of our green products makes our efforts very hard considering that our budget depends on them. But we will first commend the organizations and wiling individuals that sell the projects to raise income that inturn support these widows and orphans.
So our appeal to the entire world and all the youths is to assist us in our efforts to improve on the income of widows in the slums of kampala. I strongly believe that together we can fight poverty.
