On 15/1/2011, we visited 2 shelter homes, which were Rumah Hope, and Rumah Victory. Rumah, in Malay means Home.

On the 22/1/2011, we visited Tara Bhavan, where we met 10 youths. It is in Tamil language--- Tara: Star Bhavan: Home

The whole info session lasts for about 3 hours.

These 2 groups were led by our assistant project coordinator, Kah Yee. In Rumah Hope, a Chinese speaking boys home, we were able to reach to 26 youths, whereas in Rumah Victory we managed to reach out to 32 youths.

Topics we covered is similar to the training we had from Malaysian AIDS Council, but in a simplified way, minimizing the technical details and focusing the important messages---Preventing HIV and Understanding the modes of Transmission.

Methods we used:
Getting everyone comfortable with icebreaking games, then discussing the topics one by one, explaining further details. We also got everyone to sit down and had everyone to brainstorm and write down their ideas/thoughts. These papers are later pasted at the walls.
Girls and boys were separated during the condom demonstration. Therefor more spaces was given to them to ask questions. Everyone had the opportunity to examine what it is like.

At the end of the session, some questions were asked to test their knowledge on HIV/AIDS.

Overall, we would rate it 7 out of 10, it went on smoothly but we believed there is room for improvement.

Day 2 (10/11/2010)

35 students attended the First AIDS Kit Seminar. Chris started the session by relating our body immune system with the HIV virus. Then, he also suggested ways to bring out an interesting session such as using visual, aural and movements. We were then grouped to carry out an activity by developing our own teaching materials about immune system and HIV virus.

After a break, Chris conducted some games for us to energize us. First, we played a game called ‘over and under’. We were divided into 4 groups and lined up. We were instructed to pass an object over our head and under our lower part of body after one another. Next, we also played ‘blind games’. 2 people in a group. One be the blind person and another one be the guide. The guide only can use the words ‘left’, ‘right’, ‘go’ and ‘stop’. Then, two of them exchanged their role to continue the game. After that, Chris covered topics on the HIV prevention and demonstration on proper ways to use a condom.

After the lunchtime, we played the hitting leg game in a circle. In this game, when someone calls out a person's name, the other person sitting on his right will have to hit the other people on his right. Next, we played eye contact. One person has to walk into any other person direction and make eye contact with that person. Then, the other person has to leave his place and do the same thing as the first person does.

Later, we discussed about process in the HIV confirmatory test and treatment. The last game we had is the monkey see monkey do game. We need 4 people at one turn. The first person will be shown with a sentence written on a paper. He will then act it out to the second person, but he is not allowed to speak! The second person will then act to the third person and so on. The fourth person had to act again. Lastly, the first person had to react again and reveal what message he was trying to convey.

Meeting the project's objectives:

Political Advocacy:
We plan to have a dialogue session with the State Ministry of Welfare early next year, to share what First AIDS Kit is all about and the issue of HIV/AIDS and youths in Malaysia. The letter and proposal is in progress now.

Capacity Building:
On training-Training is provided to volunteers.
On Development of materials-Materials will be developed by youth. This is the first ever material on HIV/AIDS developed by youth in Malaysia.

On HIV testing- We will be doing the pre/post test to gauge the knowledge and risks the teens are exposed to. If there are youths who think they are exposed to risks then we shall do referrals to various clinics/hospital. However, in talks/awareness events etc, we will tell youths about where to get tested at a partnering organization. We are not able to bring youths there by ourselves, because in malaysia, minors below 18 need parental consent for HIV Testing. We will do our best to make sure they know where to get tested.

Social Mobilization:
We will volunteer for local NGOs during awareness events. We also plan to organize something(flash mob) by ourselves next year.

Empowerment:
During Sprout, we really wanted to go out there and visit most at-risk communities(eg. Street children) But since we're working with students in school now, aged 13-17, their liberty are limited by parents. Most adults are worried of the safety of their children. Also that there are barely any community centers for most at-risk teens to gather. Therefore we face difficulties to meet them and to have a session with them.

Service Delivery:
We will be able to link up with a testing centre(hospital/NGO), so we tell youths that they can get tested there, and so they will feel comfortable getting tested there as it was referred by peers.
