Timeline: April 21 05 to May 15 05

Description:
National Fair Trade Weeks will take place between May 1-15, 2005 across Canada. Our group, Fair Trade Toronto, will host various Fair Trade activities throughout Toronto, including a Fair Trade Fair with booths for local Fair Trade businesses and possible musical or other sorts of performers in support of Fair Trade. We also plan to host some films which deal with the subject and hold a mini lecture series/debate/panel discussion.


SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Mid-April - Fair Trade PASSPORT begins to be available in various stores across the city. Pay $2 to help us fund National Fair Trade Weeks 2005 and get a Passport that will provide you with discounts at around 20 stores across Toronto during Fair Trade Weeks (May 1-15). Contact us.

Sunday April 24 - Co-presentation with HotDocs: "A Decent Factory" documentary film. 7:15pm ROM Theatre. See www.hotdocs.ca for ticket pricing.

Monday April 25 - Co-presentation with HotDocs - "A Decent Factory". 7:30pm Innis Town Hall. See www.hotdocs.ca for ticket pricing.

Saturday April 30 and Sunday May 1 - Fair Trade Days at Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC). Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 11-5. Various Fair Trade vendors from across the city will be showcasing their products in the store. Learn about Fair Trade and how, by purchasing smartly, you can contribute to sustainable development in developing countries and help very poor farmers and workers earn a decent wage. Free.

Monday May 2 - Fair Trade Film and Speaker Night at Bloor Cinema. Screening of "Maria Full of Grace" accompanied by brief talk on the cut flower industry in South America by either Prof. Tanya Korovkin of the University of Waterloo (re: Ecuador) or Prof. Olga Sanmiguel Valderrama of Nipissing University (re: Colombia), or both. Q&A period. Information available on how to purchase or promote Fair Trade flowers in Toronto. Fair Trade snacks will be available at the concession stand. 6:30-9:15pm. $5. Wednesday May 4 - Fair Trade Film and Panel Discussion. Innis Town Hall. Screening of the brand new documentary "Stolen Childhoods" before its official North American premiere in NYC later in May. Accompanied by a panel discussion involving 4 academics speaking on various areas related to Fair Trade. Brief talks by each academic. Q&A period. Introduced and moderated by an Oxfam Canada representative. 6:30-9:30pm. $5. Advance tickets available - contact us.

Saturday May 7 - Fair Trade FAIR! 10am-6pm at St Barnabas Church (Danforth and Chester). 15-20 booths showcasing and offering samples of various Fair Trade products - from sports balls to ice cream to flowers to coffee, chocolate, sugar, tea, olive oil, energy bars, and much more. Live music. Activities for children. Free.

Objectives:
To educate the public about the benefits of Fair Trade, why it is important, what Fair Trade products are available in Canada and where they can be purchased, and how they can get involved.

Needs:
We are looking for:

Knowledgeable speakers on the subject of Fair Trade and/or Child Labour who are willing to participate in a panel discussion/present a brief speech in Toronto on Wednesday, May 4.

Fair Trade retailers and producers interested in making our Fair Trade discount passports available during Fair Trade weeks for customers who make a donation to Fair Trade Toronto's National Fair Trade Weeks 2005 campaign.

Journalists and people involved in the media interested in writing or publishing articles promoting Fair Trade and Fair Trade Weeks, or mentioning them on the news.

Printers who provide discounts for non-profit organizations (flyers, coupon cards, postcards)

Local businesses to sponsor TransFair Toronto and Fair Trade Weeks 2005

TV broadcasters interested in broadcasting or hosting a debate about Fair Trade or showing a movie about it with mention of the Fair Trade Weeks
