Title: Youth, HIV/AIDS, and Gender Discussion Group
Location:
Global
Categories: HIV/AIDS Gender Equality Child & Youth Rights Health
Status:
In Progress
Timeline:
Ongoing
Description:
This is a month-long moderated discussion for and by youth (those aged 15-24) on the gender dimensions of the AIDS pandemic. AIDS affects everyone, but it discriminates against women due to their biological susceptibility to infection during sexual intercourse, cultural norms that prevent women from negotiating safe sex, and their lack of access to health care and education.
Objectives:
We know that AIDS will have a devastating impact on our generation and that youth care and are taking action; however, policymakers do not always seek input from those directly affected by the disease and are often unaware of youth contributions to the fight against HIV/AIDS. Our goal is to utilize our position as the NGO Committee on Youth at the United Nations to show the international community that youth are major stakeholders and should be included in decision-making.
We want to ensure that youth have a voice at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, which takes place from 1-12 March. Government officials, UN Secretariat staff, and representatives of NGOs will meet to discuss and agree upon future action related to the Commission
Needs:
We need discussion participants! If you have any interest and/or knowledge, please contribute to the discussion. Send a blank e-mail to GenderAIDS-subscribe@groups.takingitglobal.org to join the listserv. To post e-mail GenderAIDS@groups.takingitglobal.org. See http://groups.takingitglobal.org/GenderAIDS for the regular listserv or http://groups.takingitglobal.org/GenderAIDS-weekly for weekly e-mails.
