Description:
The Great Generation will be a innovative way of communication between young people around the world and our political and economical leaders.
1,5 billion people in the world are aged 12-24, one third of the population are under 30 years. These young people are healthier and better educated then any other generation in history. The new flat technologies have made them better informed and connected then every before. This leaves us with a window of opportunity. The opportunity to get the sustainable generation we so desperately needs. But then we need to act now and get young people involved in building the world they will grow up in!
Better youth participation benefits the community in many ways;
* Young people have a unique perspective
Young people have, because they are young, a unique and pure view. They say what they feel. Something that policy makers need to hear in a time where PR-agencies and think tanks build “TV-friendly” messages.
* Young people will grow up in the shadows of the decisions being made today
Many of the decisions made today will affect young people more that the people deciding about them. Youths got to get more influence over these issues. Both to raise their awareness in the subject and to express their views before a political decision.
* If young people get involved today it’s a lower risk of destructive behavior
Many young people are frustrated. They have a critical point of view that can, if they can’t participate better and feel that they are being listened to, being channeled into destructive habits, violence and damage. The need to be heard are strong. If young people get access to the policy making arena and meet on equal terms they will channel their frustration into a proactive and sustainable way.
This blog will show that young people are ready to participate if they get the channels and tools to do it!
UN Year of Youth
“The International Year is about advancing the full and effective participation of youth in all aspects of society. We encourage all sectors of society to work in partnership with youth and youth organizations to better understand their needs and concerns and to recognize the contributions that they can make to society.”
From August 12th 2011 to August 11th 2012, United Nations have proclaimed the “Year of Youth” to call all parties to work for a better youth participation. Great Generation will participate in the year and be linked to the different initiatives that will run throughout the year.
ABOUT THE BLOGGER
I’m Jonas Eriksson, an educator and activist. Based in Sweden but works globally. I’ve been working since 1998 with social and environmental issues in organizations and as a consultant for different projects, raging from small workshops with 10 participants to a global festival with 5 000 participants.
”My dream is to create a space for young people to get the empowerment for change. A place where you can meet others, be inspired and get the tools you need to go from idea into practice and be a leader. The challenges we face demands a great generation that will be willing to live sustainable and inspire others to change as well.
I want The Great Generation to amplify the voices of the young people. And show that they know what needs to be done and are committed to make the changes we need.”
