Health Living Through Sports (HELTS)

About  About
Title: Health Living Through Sports (HELTS)
Location:
Categories: Health

Status: In Planning
Timeline: February 10 10 to February 10 10

Description:
The mission of the project is to increase HIV and AIDS awareness and referrals in out of school youths in Uganda through sports.rnHELTS project will target out of school youths in Kampala Kawempe Division slums. rnSports and games activities like field games, board games, table games, plus others depending on the preference of youths in an area will be used to mobilize them. This will be in the free time because this is the time when youths out of school engage in risky activities like early sex. This explains why 12 percent of males and 16 percent of females by the time they are 15 years, they would have engaged in sexual intercourse (Uganda demographic survey 2006). Therefore by using sports, young men and women will gather and HIV and AIDS information will be passed on to them.

Background:
According to the Uganda Demographic Survey of 2006, 81.2 percent of females and 82.3 percent of males of the total population attend Primary school. But this reduces to as low as 16.2 percent for males and 16.4 percent for females in Secondary school. The survey found out that Secondary School National Attendance Ratio rises with wealth, from about 3 percent in the lowest wealth quintile to 38 percent in the wealthiest quintile. This finding suggests that poverty and factors related to poverty play an important role in whether children are sent to secondary school. rnBasing on the above, most children in their teenage age have little or even no access to HIV and AIDS awareness like their peers who go to secondary school. rnThis project will target out of school youths between 12-23 years living in Kampala slums, of Kawempe Division. Most of the urban poor live in slums and they are the ones who fail to send their children to secondary schools basing on the findings above. According to Kampala City Council, Kawempe Division has the most youths out of school living in the slums of Katanga, Bwaise, Makerere Kivulu, Kazo, Kalerwe, plus many others. According to the survey, in urban areas, youths between the ages of 15-24, 74.3 percent of females and 86.2 percent of males access HIV information from radio (Uganda demographic survey 2006). However it is quiet expensive for a youth to have a radio for to access such information.rnExisting NGOs concentrate in school outreaches and publication of literature for educated youths. There is a gap to focus on HIV sensitisation to youths in their leisure time like through sports. This also limits on the risks youths face in spending leisure time in risky activities that can expose them to HIV.

Objectives:
1. To sensitize 200 out of school youths in HIV and AIDS awareness in Kawempe Division Kampala by May 2010.rnWith the achievement of this objective, HIV and AIDS awareness will be increased, by a great percentage which will be determined by the findings in the baseline survey. Hence this will contribute to the achievement of the project aim.rn2. To train 30 peer educators from 5 slums in Kawempe Division by March 2010.rnThe peers trained will help to attain project sustainability, and reaching other peers that may not have direct access as beneficiaries deep in the slums. rn3. To form 1 sports club with a core principle of HIV and AIDS information dissemination to out of school youths in Kampala by May 2010. rnThese sports clubs formed will help mobilize more out of school youths and more information and HIV and AIDS awareness will be increased. Also project sustainability after its termination will be achieved; more information will still be passed on through these clubs

Milestones:
• There is no directly identified source of funds for project implementation. However, we shall submit this proposal to different donor organization including applying for GYCA small grant. Meanwhile I will organise for fundraising activities to ensure that the project gets funds.rn• There is also a problem of demobilisation to the project beneficiaries. I will overcome this by training of peer educators, who will constantly pass on HIV information to the youths deep in the slums.rn• The project may get some resistance from various individuals like the parents of the youths and institutions like local council committees. This will be dealt with by involving all these stake holders right from the start of the project. This will make them feel a part of the project hence less resistance in future.
