Description:
From August, IEC Nepal had opened its doors to its first project in Pokhara, Nepal: the establishment of the Skills Development Center to Pokhara, Nepal. This center is aimed at providing the three basic skills needed for a blind or partially sighted person to be a fully functioning and contributing member in society. Participants in this six-month program will undergo training in technology, conversational English and basic management and administrative skills, ending with an internship for hands-on practice opportunities.

Background:
IEC Nepal was conceived and initiated by Khom Raj Sharma, a native of Pokhara. In addition to overcoming his own challenges of being blind, Mr. Khom has helped empower people with disabilities through his numerous initiatives and projects for the disabled in Nepal.

Some of the projects that Mr. Khom has organized are workshops in communities where parents and care takers were educated about the importance of sending children with disabilities to schools; a campaign for sensitizing and training people on the treatment of the disabled in the community; the creation and funding of a full functioning digital library - the first of its kind and the only existing one in Nepal.

Objectives:
The overall goal of the IEC Nepal is to empower and bring out the hidden talents of people with disabilities through technology and soft skills in order to increase their potentiality, creativity, employability and to help build an inclusive society.
The specific objective of IEC Nepal are:
–To provide computer and managerial skills training for 200 blind persons in the span of 5 years,
–To help at least 80percent our beneficiaries to attain employment in their respective fields by the end of 5 years,
–To promote and encourage for the optimum usage of free and open source software in their studies and at their work place,
–To raise funds in order to have our own office and training center to make the project self-sustainable with in the period of three years.
