Background:
The Nigerian Universities Debating Council is a non Governmental Organization, which organizes and Coordinates activities to promote and increase debate in and among schools and Universities in Nigeria. This association was founded in June, 2007, by Matthew Bright David Okorie (Mabrig) A Public Speaking Tutor/Coach
Starting in July, 2007, the Association began having training at Students Union Building and Ekpo Refectory (Kitchen end) University of Nigeria, Nsukka
NUDC follows the traditions Of the World Universities Debating Council (WUDC) which is the largest debating tournament, and one of the largest and prestigious annual international student events in the world.
Nigerian Universities Debating Council hosted the first UNN Debating Championship in August-September 2007, and the Second UNN Debating championship,2008
Currently, NUDC is working on hosting the first UNN Intefaculty debating Championship, and the first Nigerian Universities Debating Championship
Objectives:
To spread debating competition among Nigerian universities
To foster the interest on intellectual activity among students.
To organize local, national, and international competitions
To select the members of the national team who will represent Nigeria in the World universities Debating Championship
To help its members improve their communication and leadership skills.
To prepare Nigerian University Students for National and International Debating Tournaments.
To strengthen the Skills of Reasoning, Argumentation and Persuasion
To Promote and Advance Public Speaking, Critical thinking, and Social Interaction in the University Environments
To develop leaders who meet up with global challenges of the 21ST CENTURY
To revive the interest in public speaking and debating among students.
UNN INTER -FACULTY DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIP
RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE 1st U.N.N INTER- FACULTY DEBATING CHAMPIONSHIP
I. GENERAL
1. These set of rules and regulations govern The 1st Inter Faculty Debating Championship (The 1st IFDC) to be hosted by Nigerian Universities Debating Council in Partnership with Students Union Government University of Nigeria,Nsukka
2. The IFDC committee has full authority to interpret and modify, if necessary of these rules. The decision of the committee with respect to these rules will be final and binding.
3. All debates will be conducted in English
II. ELIGIBILITY
1. Each faculty may only send minimally two teams & maximally four teams with adjudicators are minimally (n-1); n is total of the teams.
2. The debaters are eligible to participate in The 1st IFDC, only if they are enrolled as full time students of University of Nigeria
3. Each team in The 1st IFDC consists of four members. All members of a team must be enrolled in the same faculty.
4. Chief of adjudicators as the independent body has full authority to handle adjudication system and motion.
6. The Tournament Director reserves the right to investigate the legitimacy of any person or institution participating in 1st The IFDC and reserves the right to expel any team or person who is bona fide cannot be established to this satisfaction.
III. FORMAT OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP
1. The 1st IFDC uses Parliamentary System. The system will be conducted in two phases:
a) The Preliminary Phase
b) The Elimination Phase
2. In the preliminary phase of The IFDC, there will be five rounds of debates. This phase will adopt “the half competition system” and for the elimination phase will adopt “true power matching”.
3. All teams will start on an equal placing with the pairing for the first round being done randomly by lottery. For the subsequent rounds, the teams will be graded on the basis of the results of all the preceding rounds of the phase. The following grading criteria will be considered in decreasing order of priority.
a) Victory Points (Win-Loss Record; 1 point for a win 0 for a loss).
b) Cumulative Margin (Difference of cumulative marks in favour of and against the team)
c) Cumulative Total Team Score.
4. At the end of this grading for each round, the top two teams will meet each other; the next two teams will meet each other and so on. ‘
5. The top teams at the end of five rounds of the preliminary phase will qualify for the elimination phase of IFDC.
6. Four elimination rounds namely the Octo Final, Quarter Final, the Semi Final and the Grand Final, will decide the winner of The IFDC. True power matching is the best meets the worst, based on the result of all preliminary rounds.
7. There would be no additional time for motion preference and case building for those who are late.
8. No electronic device which can be used by debater during the case building and debate session, example: cell phone, alfa link, and lap top.
9. Each debater will deliver a substantive speech of eight (7) minutes duration. After three of them have come forward, reply speaker of both sides will deliver their reply speech for five (5) minutes. The first or the second speaker from both sides can be the position of reply speaker.
10. There would be no replacement of debater in case one member of a team can not join the match. The uncompleted team may only compete in preliminary round and automatically not eligible to join the elimination round.
12. Debater is not allowed to leave debate room during the match.
IV. REGISTRATION METHOD
1. Registration will be started on May 23rd 2008 to June 5th 2008. Registration fee is N5.00, - per person (debater/ adjudicator
The registration fee includes facilities, such as: , debate Materials, Debate Tutorial on VCD.
3. At the first day, all participants (debaters/ adjudicators/ ) are required to fill a form with one of 3x4 size colour photograph
4. The quota of participant is only 30 teams. If the quota is fulfilled, the registration will be closed.
5. For those who are not l registered with money, they can participate , they will not get the facilities.
