Jordan Youth Forum 2002
“Increase Youth Participation in Jordan”
The Jordan Youth Forum 2002, organized by Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Jordan Office and the youth preparatory committee took place October 3.-5.2002 at Al-Hussein Cultural Center.
Konrad Adenauer Foundation supports youth as part of its commitment to Jordan’s democratic development based on responsible citizens’ participation in all aspects of their life. With the majority of Jordan’s population - two thirds under 30 years old – young Jordanians have to be trusted and given a chance to contribute to shaping Jordan’s future.
120 young Jordanians from all around Jordan participated in this three-day workshop organized according to “Open Space” Methodology that ensured intensive participation as well as commitment to the projects they were planning for. For the first time in Jordan and the Middle East Youth, youth took the initiative to organize and lead such an event.
“Increase Youth Participation in Jordan” was the overall theme of the Forum that aimed at youth planning concrete projects for youth to increase their participation in all aspects of the social life
Partly based on last year’s Youth Forum results, the participants identified 6 projects to reflect youth objectives for which they had to present expected results, and in a second step suggest activities within a time frame that would lead to reach these objectives. In a third step they assigned the necessary tasks and each group committed to implement their action plan and take over responsibility for short-term and mid-term activities that would lead up to next year’s Jordan Youth Forum.
Participants worked on the 6 projects they initiated and developed according to their needs and interests, keeping in mind that they have to be realistic as they themselves will carry them out. These projects were:
1. Increase political, cultural and social awareness
The project included the sub-idea “Political participation and importance of dialogue” that aims at building strong leadership skills to guide oneself and others; they also plan to establish a Youth Club were they can meet, discuss and get trained.
2. Fight youth unemployment
The project included creating awareness and changing traditional ways of thinking such as the “shame phenomenon”, and adapting “Education for market needs”. Several activities were presented to support the project such as data collection, providing workshops and seminars and collecting data on the market needs.
3. A youth association to coordinate youth projects.
The project aims at creating an organisation to represent Jordan youth and to give them the legal framework that will allow them to carry out the planned youth-to-youth projects in Jordan and create a network for youth volunteers. The Association will be the first of its kind that will build up a new civil society structure to further youth interests within Jordanian society and an opportunity for youth to lead themselves.
4. Jordan Youth Website
This project will be working over networking Jordan Youth and exchanging experience to enhance their skills. The web site will prepare polls, discussion forums on relevant topics, news activities for youth as well as career counselling. It will be a main tool to connect youth with each other and follow up over the projects.
5. Increase youth voluntary work
Voluntary work groups will be established to serve in all fields, the project will concentrate on training youth to be qualified volunteers. They will provide the Jordan Youth Web Site with information about voluntary work and opportunities.
6. Talk “Hakee”
“Hakee” is planned to create a space for youth to talk and raise topics freely, the project will establish teams all around Jordan, and they will work over documenting these discussions, on cassettes and also in print.
Outlook
The participants of the Jordan Youth Forum 2002 succeeded in creating coordination mechanisms to follow-up on their planned projects throughout the coming months. Foremost, they will concentrate on founding a legal entity for them as an umbrella for their projects and self-help initiatives, while the development of their website – already registered as www.jordanyouth.org - will keep the momentum of participation to create a network of voluntary youth engagement.
What makes the annual Jordan Youth Forum a special event – since 2000 - is the consequent participatory approach. Each participant leaves stronger, more capable and committed to making a difference in his own community, and especially for other youth in Jordan. We believe that young Jordanians have a lot in common, not only problems but also visions, and - given a chance - a lot of energy to make them come true.
