Description:
This project is facilitated or governed by a student called Barimah Osei Kwaku, from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. The project is supposed to investigate the poverty driven life of children at a village called Ayeduase in Kumasi, Ghana. This project is supposed to be conducted in April,2009.
Background:
here are so many social problems confronting the world today. One of such problems that has catch my attention to deal with this is the “poverty driven life of children”\r\nThe project is supposed to be conducted in town/viallge called ayeduase in Ashanti region of Ghana. The target population from which the sample will be taken is the children and the adults spouses. This town have a population of about 34,000 of which 30% are children. But unfortunately, children are sometimes forced to work all because of poverty.\r\n\r\nIt is a fact that social condition of many Ghanaians are characterized by poverty, deprivation, low standard of living and generally poor quality of life (Ghana Growth to poverty strategy, 2006-2009, volume 1). Ayeduase, a relatively large suburb of Kumasi with heterogeneous population brings the notion about large family size, school drop outs, and teenage pregnancy among others. Ayeduase is of four suburbs namely; Aminobra, Fafraso, Konkori, Ahenbronum, and new site. This has come about as a result of illiteracy, lack of industries coupled with increased population growth. With approximately to Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ayeduase serves as a commercial center with prospects of wage labour. The people are grappling with health problems like malaria and several challenges which pose a threat to social and economic productive life. The poverty level in Ghana is very high and ayeduase is no exception. This can be observed among the inhabitants with very few of them engaged in petty trading and high school drop outs. With the introduction of relief package in the form of $15 by the government to alleviate the pressure on the very poor in society monthly although on pilot basis, the agony of the poor continued to rise. This relief package is called “LEAP”.
Objectives:
The general objective of the project is to investigate the poverty driven life of children in Ayeduase.\r\n\r\nThe specific objectives are as follows;\r\n\r\n1. Examine the educational level of the people in Ayeduase and for that matter Ghana. This is to bring to bear literacy level of the people which may subsequently have an impact on the people.\r\n\r\n2. Identify the employment status of the people. This will help to know the frequency of the employed and unemployed so as to ascertain whether the people/parent may are poor or not. This is because the employment status of the parent may have significant effect on the children.\r\n\r\n3. Find out the literacy level of children who have reach school going age. This will help to determine the probability of some of the children engaging in income earning activities just because their parents cannot take care of them.\r\n\r\n4. Find out the effect of poverty on the children in the community. This is because it will serve as a source of reference for policy makers and non governmental organizations so as to enable them fight issues on related to child labour/slavery as a result of poverty.\r\n\r\n5. Examine the family size of the various households and how it positions them economically and socially. This then aid in identifying the economic capabilities of the people. This is because one will get to know if there is high dependency on the economically active adults. As a result there is the probability that it will put pressure on the working force and the government resources.\r\n\r\nTherefore, the adult/parents will not be able to take adequate care of the children.\r\n\r\n6. Find out ways in which poverty can be reduced.\r\n\r\n7. Examine ways in which child labour and slavery can be reduced.
Milestones:
1. Overall, the project management team finds that the annual project result to install peer advocacy system for children in Ayeduase in Kumasi.\r\n2. Existing social welfare Department in the Kumasi Metropolis has been providing street children with accommodation and educational assistance with concerned corporate organizations like Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit(D.O.V.V.S.U).\r\n3. Adult unemployed are now sensitized to be apprenticed through vocational and technical training to alleviate the level of poverty.\r\n4. Community intervention and other groups have been educating women on reproductive health. It has been educating them on the need for family planning so as to reduced the number of birth. This will reduced to much burden on the parents in order to cut high cost of living.
