No Activity in last six years for MDGs!!

Millennium Development Goals and Pakistan

At the 2000 Millennium Summit, a major breakthrough was reached for the world when 189 Heads of State and Governments assembled together at the United Nations and pledged to make a better world for all by 2015. They agreed to do this by achieving the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.
The Goals are a unique international agreement, being time-bound, measurable and having the public promise of every Head of State in the world. All eight Goals are achievable by 2015, but only if governments live up to their promises.

These are the Goals to be achieved by 2015.

• Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

• Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education

• Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women

• Goal 4: Reduce child mortality

• Goal 5: Improve maternal health

• Goal 6: Combat HIV/Aids, malaria and other diseases

• Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability

• Goal 8: Develop a global PARTNERSHIP FOR DEVELOPMENT

MDGs campaign is very important for developing countries but, I observed Developed countries are taking MDG seriously and organizing different workshops, youth conventions regarding MDG regularly while developing countries are not showing much interest in this regard
In Pakistan, I didn’t see any kind of action or activity from Government side yet.

Just like Government creates awareness about different things like Clean Water, Environment, Polio Campaign etc through Media It is very important to create awareness about MDGs in Pakistan and I believe our youth can play an important and responsible role in this regard.

Through this space, I would like to give some suggestions to Government of Pakistan and Ministry of youth affairs. I think every provincial government should organize some youth conventions and open forum 2-3 times in a year where youth(University Students etc), Government officials, NGOs representatives, some big personalities(from Sports, Industries etc) and UN Official(if possible) could sit together and discuss possible ways for achieving MDGs for Pakistan and then at least once on federal level, government should organize a national workshop on MDGs just like they arrange youth convention.

Also, Provincial Government should start MDGs Campaign in Schools (especially in Private School). I think by this, we can not only collect so may good ideas/ suggestions but can involve our young generation in very useful activity which is very important from future’s perspective.

Now a Question arises where to start. Well, there already lots of material available on Millennium Development Goals at UN website. A very good Youth Action Guide on MDGs is also present over web which one can easily download and I think we can customize it according to our own facts and figures.

It’s really very sad to say that in last six years, we couldn’t take any action on it and I hope current Government will take some serious actions on it soon at all level because achieving MDGs means bringing propensity in Pakistan for everyone not just for elite class.
