Description:
The Youth Advocates for the United Nations (formerly UNYAP), a proud member of the Global Youth Action Network (GYAN), in partnership with UNICY, UNFPA-YAP, and GK1MB Silliman University, is organizing the 3rd National MDG Summit on May 20-24 with the theme “YOU-th: L.E.A.D.S. the MDG commitment”. The LEADS principle stands for Leadership, Empowerment, Advocacy, Dedication, and Sustainability of the millennium development goals. \r\n\r\nThis invitation calls for college or high school students, young professionals and UN MDG advocates who are active members of service oriented organizations. The said activity aims to develop the skills of servant-leaders to become better models of the youth. Our plenary sessions would focus on youth concepts of good governance (1) on poverty alleviation, (2) on improving adolescent reproductive health, (3) on HIV and AIDS prevention and control, and (4) on Environmental Sustainability.

Background:
The Philippines is one of the signatories of the MDG declaration last September 8, 2000. Four of its goals aim to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, to provide universal access to reproductive health, to halt and reverse the spread of HIV and AIDS, and to ensure environmental sustainability. As one of the actively participating countries during the STAND UP: TAKE ACTION against poverty event, 35.2 million Filipinos made it in the Guinness World Record. \r\n\r\nDespite the achievement, poverty still exists in the country with current statistics saying that 1 out of 2 Filipinos are poor. On maternal health, 11 mothers die everyday because of maternal complications of childbirth. On the spread of HIV and AIDS, there had been a 128% increase of Filipinos detected with HIV in 2008. It is alarming that half of the newly detected HIV positives worldwide were young people below 25 years of age. On environment, 65.31% of Filipino households do not have access to safe water. It is also disturbing to note that, as an agricultural country, 76% of the total land area of the Philippines suffers some degree of environmental degradation. \r\n\r\nIn the belief that the youth is the hope of today, we young people would share its part in the leadership for making the MDG’s a reality. Thus this year’s MDG Summit for Young Filipino Leaders aims to remind the government and ourselves that with good governance as key to achieving these goals, we can therefore STAND UP and make poverty history.

Objectives:
General Objectives:\r\nWith minimum facilitation, the participants shall be exposed to various activities related to the topic on the MDG’s which would provide knowledge on what these goals are for, create an attitude of making changes in the community, and enrich the skills of servant-leaders to become better models of the youth. \r\n\r\nSpecific Objectives: \r\n By end of the 5-day summit the participants shall be able to: \r\n1. Fully define and understand the purpose of the U.N. Millennium Development Goals,\r\n2. Understand the concept of good governance and its application the UN MDG’s to young people,\r\n3. Recognize the important role of the youth in the fight against HIV and AIDS,\r\n4. Develop effective and attainable action plans that can help improve reproductive health, \r\n5.
