PROGRESS REPORT
ON THE NATIONAL INFORMATION CAMPAIGN MOLDOVA
RUN BETWEEN SEPTEMBER 10 AND OCTOBER 10
Completed by Eugeniu Graur – Country Coordinator
The National Information Campaign started in Moldova on September 10th with the first school in Balti where we had a seminar on the impact of the Information and Communication Technologies on Youth and the challenges that the internet offers for youth interaction, communication and sharing of information and experience. Also we have distributed the brochures that we have designed for the campaign and that contained information about the WSIS, the role of the Youth in the WSIS, about Youth Initiatives like YCDO, YES, TakingITglobal, GlobalKnowledgePartnership, WSIS Youth Caucus and so on, providing a short outline about the initiatives and links to their web sites.
In the next four weeks, startin from September 10th, four people from our organization (You can see attached their resumees) have worked as volunteers to spred the information about the WSIS and the emergence of the IS throughout the country. The team consisted of four university students from Department of Economics of Balti State University and a Peace Corps Volunteer from the US, who offered their time in order to contribute to the development of our campaign. Their names are Natalia Cojuhari, Nelly Amarfii, Adam Oliver (Peace Corps Volunteer) and me.
Besides the information campaign that we have undertaken, we have selected a number of young people that will work together in order to draft a national strategy for the development of the IS in Moldova and suggest ways to spread the benefits of the ICT’s as solutions for overcoming poverty and lack of information. Below you can see the list of the young people that are involved in this process. They showed a very strong interest in ICT’s and that was the main criteria when we selected them for the next stage of the promotional campaign of the WSIS in Moldova. Unfortunately, access to internet and communication technologies is not so big in Moldova and there are still about 90 % of the schools in Moldova that lack access to the Internet, and in villages the percentage is even bigger. That is why there is a need for a national strategy aimed to connect schools to the Internet. Our observations during the campaign revealed that some young people, especially in the villages didn’t even hear about the internet and ICT’s. Table 1 shows the number of schools and universities that we reached with our information campaign and also the number of young people that visited our seminars and received our brochures. Also we have translated the Power Point Presentation “Youth at WSIS” and used it to inform our beneficiaries about the role of the youth in the IS and at the Summit. Please see attached the presentation.
