Description:
myProjectbook is a resource portal and online community that equips young project leaders with the tools and knowledge to map out and plan projects. It also, connects projects similar in location or sector of work so that young people can learn and build on past experiences. myProjectbook uses existing connections in your social networks (like Facebook and Twitter) to enable you to work with people you already know to organize projects, campaigns and events.
More than just a social network, by collecting the project experiences of young people leading projects around the world as they are actively occurring, myProjectbook fosters a community of good project planning, monitoring and evaluation; accountability and transparency between project members and to donors; and helps to build and demonstrate the case for youth-led development and increased funding for the sector.
Background:
The issue:
The concept of development led by young people raises increasing interest among the development community each year, most donors remain reluctant to commit large funds to the field. It is argued that often, young people are not accountable and fail to deliver effective reports about their projects. Unfortunately, this is often the case, as PCI has witnessed with its own Be the Change projects, that in many instances young people have been unable or failed to provide any reports and evaluation about the impact of their projects.
Mandate:
Purpose: myProjectbook is an online project management platform and resource portal for youth-led project leaders to share, document and learn with their peers and experienced project leaders or mentors.
Mission: myProjectbook provides informal, experiential learning opportunities and connections for young people, while building the case for effective youth-led development to increase policy and financial support for the sector.
Vision: A world in which young people are not seen as a problem, but as individuals equally capable and of taking an active role in providing solutions to development problems in the world around them.
Objectives:
1. Improve young users\' understanding of project management and monitoring & evaluation through youth-friendly online trainings and project management tools.
2. Establish partnerships between youth-led projects, project leaders and mentors to provide feedback and advising on project work.
3. Document, track and compare across different types and sectors of youth-led projects over the long-term.
Milestones:
Milestone 1: Start! Create myProjectbook website: an open social network where young people can connect to their peers, development professionals and donors, and receive project management advice and training. Result: 500 young people signed up projects on myProjectbook by the end of 3 years.
Resource Portal: The resource portal will be the component of the website where young people can engage in the process of self-learning about project planning & M&E.
Milestone 2: Develop and publish a youth-led Monitoring and Evaluation Toolkit: to support youth to improve M&E of their projects, and to seek best practices for youth-led development projects and initiatives. Result: Changes and improvements on knowledge of M&E tracked through before and after tests from at least 50% of all users.
Profiles: Different profile pages will facilitate the process of matching young people and their project interests to mentors. While we will work to facilitate connections and mentors as much as possible for all users of myProjectbook regardless of how they came to join the network, we will prioritize those projects suggested to us in the list of participating organizations. Furthermore, through the creation of profiles, it is expected that users will be able to find suitable and qualified mentors independently as the network grows.
Milestone 3: Recruit mentors and universities interested in providing M&E support to youth projects. Result: 500 mentors providing support to 300 youth-led projects after 3 years
Milestone 4: Recruit YLD projects from partners to participate and connect to mentors & universities. Result: Young people and mentors report satisfaction with connections established and advising provided
Benchmarking: The resources will be accompanied by a short quiz to guide users to recommended sections to read based on current skill sets of users, and to benchmark their initial capacity and track their learning outcomes as they use myProjectbook. Result: 500 project plans and evaluations available online a the end of 3 years
Featured projects: Users will be given incentives to actively post quality information on their projects. Projects recognized for their best practices and reporting on the site will be featured on the home page, which will change on a monthly basis. Result: 75% of young leaders reflect positively on their projects and its contribution to professional growth
Results database: Project reports will be compiled into a searchable database for donors and practitioners to access. Evaluators (whether young people, mentors or universities) will be encouraged to detail their evaluation methods.
