Title: Healthy, Green, and Socially Just Cafeterias in the OCDSB
Location:
Categories: Environment Education Health
Status:
In Progress
Timeline:
December 11 08 to February 28 09
Description:
We're developing a vision for food services within the Ottawa Carleton District School Board that reflects students' social, environmental, and ethical values.
Background:
The Ottawa Carleton District School Board is in the process of choosing a new food service provider. This means they're making a decision about which company is going to be allowed to sell food in the cafeterias of all OCDSB high schools for the next three years. Right now, they're at the stage of developing a Request for Proposal (RFP), which means they're laying out the criteria that the food service provider will have to meet. Now is, therefore, the ideal time to contact the school board and tell them what we would like our cafeterias to look like. The school board should know what we, as students (i.e. the raison d'être of the schools) would like to see happen (or not happen) in the cafeteria. If the OCDSB forces the food services provider to adopt more sustainable practices by including the criteria you ask for in the RFP, then the impact on the sustainability of school food systems will be huge because it will occur at every OCDSB high school.
Objectives:
We're trying to convince the OCDSB to ask food services providers to consider environmental and/or social criteria such as: reducing packaging, buying local organic ingredients, serving culturally appropriate foods, etc.
