What should we request that the school board include in its "Request for Proposal" to food services providers?

Exclusivity Contracts
December 15, 2008 - 05:05 PM

|
The school board shouldn't sign a contract that grants the food services provider exclusive rights to sell food at school. Student-run cafes need to be allowed to operate because:
- they're good for fundraisers for the environment club (and other student organisations)
- they're more likely to sell local, organic, or fair trade products because they aren't so bureaucratic

Local and Organic Food
December 15, 2008 - 05:09 PM

The cafeteria should sell local and organic foods. Good places to start are:
- fresh fruit and vegetables (easy to obtain)
- grains (can be purchased in bulk and aren't necessarily that much more expensive that conventional foods)
- organic pre-packaged foods like milk, pop and juice

Reusable Dishes
December 15, 2008 - 05:14 PM
|
|
Gisele-Lalonde (a French public school in Orleans) has reusable dishes in the cafeteria. They fundraised to buy restaurant-style dishwashers, and the dishes are loaded and unloaded by students who need to complete their community service hours.
Perhaps we should propose switching to biodegradable dishes as a stepping stone on the way from styrofoam/plastic to reusable dishes. Green Shift (http://www.greenshift.ca/) is a Canadian company (based in Toronto) that sells biodegradable dishes - they might be good folks to contact for information/useful stats.
