Congratulations to February's TIG Stars, Jin Yun and Eddy! They both have performed exceptionally and on behalf of TakingITGlobal I want to say thank you to both of you!!
Here's a little bit of what they each said about their experiences with TIG and their backgrounds..
Jin Yun
1. When did you become involved with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team?
What motivated you to become an online volunteer?
I have learnt and gained a lot from TIG. I’m grateful for everything that it has given me, and I do not want to just sit back and take it for granted. Then, I thought, volunteering to translate the website is perhaps a method of contribution in my own humble way.
2. What attracts you to your role as a volunteer?
· Being part of a global community of motivated young people
· Knowing that I can give back a little to an organization that I have learnt and gained a lot from (that’s TIG, of course), even if it’s just a little in the meantime.
· Volunteering is contributing to society in my own humble way.
· It is flexible where and when I want to do my task
3. What have you learned from the experience so far?
Any abilities that one possesses can be an asset to contribute. Knowing Chinese/Mandarin proficiently is not uncommon, but most of my peers do not realize that they can make use of multilingual abilities to do meaningful things. One does not have to have a particularly unique talent—Olympic gold medalist, Nobel laureate—to make an impact.
I also learn when I see how the TIG Staff and the other Online Volunteers are so dedicated. It takes collective effort to make things happen.
While translating the passages, I’m also reading and understanding the contents at the same time. It also makes me think about different ways of interpreting or conveying the message.
Furthermore, I appreciate my mother tongue even more, and realize how unique, similar and different various languages can be—just like the people in our diverse society.
4. What advice would you give other young people out there interested in becoming online volunteers?
You have the ability to handle a great workload—just make sure you don’t get burn out! Besides, if you have a smart phone, online volunteering can be done while in the train, waiting for the bus and anytime when you’re bored; unfortunately I don’t have a smart phone yet but I multitask by listening to music.
We all have other commitments; but don’t be afraid to make online volunteering one of them. If you know you’re going to be busy during certain periods, then, try to translate more than required when you’re less occupied before that. Or even after that—it’s better late than never!
Keep an open mind and be aware of how other people in this dynamic community are doing their part.
5. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?
I have never once thought that I will be selected to become one of the TIG Stars. This is way beyond what I expect or deserve.
It’s not the ‘Star’ that matters. It’s about being part of a Community of Stars—TIG Staff (Salute!), TIG volunteers, and TIG members…

This month's Multilingual TIG stars are (**!!!Drum Rolls Please!!!**) Mpasua and Marina. Congratulations to both! Mpasua has been a very important member of our Swahili translators since May, 02 2009 and Mariana has been on our Russian team starting November 02, 2010. You can read more about them here: http://multilingual.tigweb.org/team.html. We asked Mpasua and Marina to answer some questions on their experience volunteering with TIG. Here are their responses:
MPASUA
1. When did you become involved with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team? What motivated you to become an online volunteer?
I first started involving myself with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team about 5 years ago. The motivation to become an online volunteer derived from my general love to volunteer in any endeavour and especially so my passion to the language of Swahili which I volunteer in.
2. What attracts you to your role as a volunteer?
My zeal and belief to spread the Swahili Language far and wide using the online plartform since arguably it is the fastest growing language in Africa.
3. What have you learned from the experience so far?
I have learnt the POWER of believing that you can achieve whatever that you conceive in your mind. I have also learnt that victory is not necessarily for everyone!
4. What advice would you give other young people out there interested in becoming online volunteers?
This is the best thing they can do in this New Year as one of the ways to start this new cycle of 11’ as the previous one ends with 10’
5. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?
We should finish and finalize on the Translation process of the whole site into the Swahili language. More innovative ways should be brainstormed on how to collectively involve everyone in the Swahili Team for us to achieve greater heights of achievements.
Questions and Their Answers Given in English and Swahili:
Maswali na Majibu Yake Yatolewa kwa Kiingereza na Kiswahili:
MARINA
1. When did you become involved with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer
team? What motivated you to become an online volunteer?
I became a TIG volunteer in October 2010. I was motivated by the opportunities volunteering
provides and also by the fact that TIG is meant to inspire young people to be active members of
their communities.
2. What attracts you to your role as a volunteer?
I think volunteering is a great way to gain experience and confidence in your chosen profession. As I decided to become a full-time translator, I thought that volunteering would give me an opportunity to learn more about the process of translating. Volunteering is a wonderful way to learn 'on the job' without the pressures of a paid job.
3. What have you learned from the experience so far?
I've learnt that translating can be a very creative activity and sometimes even addictive! I've also
realised how easy it is to work with people from all around the world and that people from different cultures have much more in common that the common sense usually assumes.
4. What advice would you give other young people out there interested in becoming online volunteers?
Do it, if you are serious about it, and do your best. Volunteering is a commitment. The fact that you are not paid does not mean you can produce substandard work. Use it as an opportunity to raise your standards.
5. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?
I'm quite enjoying it.

This month's TIG stars are Felix and Derya. Felix has been an integral part of our German translation team since April, 2010 and Derya has been our Turkish Coordinator for the past 6 months. You can read more about them here: http://multilingual.tigweb.org/team.html. We asked Felix and Derya to answer some questions on their experience volunteering. Here are their responses:
Felix:
1. When did you become involved with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team? What motivated you to become an online volunteer?
It was in mid-April when I was selected as a volunteer. TIG's call for applications attracted my attention because I knew how important language translations are to help TIG reach into the farest corners of the world and also because I saw a chance to train and develop my own language skills.
2. What attracts you to your role as a volunteer?
I like my role as a volunteer because of the two-sided effect: you do something good, but you get something more valuable than money in return.
3. What have you learned from the experience so far?
I've improved my translation skills and also learnt about interesting events and causes that TIG promotes.
4. What advice would you give other young people out there interested in becoming online volunteers?
Get the job with the right objective. Think about the quality of work you have to offer and how your work can help you get better in what you do.
5. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?
Easy-to-use online tools and high independence make it an enjoyable work. However, mile-long formatting placeholders in the translations can sometimes cause a little head ache.
Derya:
1. When did you become involved with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team? What motivated you to become an online volunteer?
I became involved with TIG's online volunteer team 2 years ago when I decided to put my language skills to work for a cause. The concept of TIG bringing youth from all over the world for initiating a change for the better definitely provided me with a cause to work for.
2. What attracts you to your role as a volunteer?
I love working as a team and am very glad to be working with dedicated and inspiring in the Turkish and the Multilingual Team. The flexibility of working hours is another attractive trait of this job.
3. What have you learned from the experience so far?
I learned valuable skills such as teamwork and time management besides improving my translation skills. Deciding on your own work schedule taught me so much in terms of time management!
4. What advice would you give other young people out there interested in becoming online volunteers?
DO IT! You'll be working for a cause along with great people! It doesn't take much time and its benefits (fun, experience, networking...) by far outweigh the responsibilities it entails.
5. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?
I learned, interacted, served a cause, improved, had fun, got inspired... It was just a great experience overall!

Congratulations to this month's TIG stars- Elaine and Farzana from the Portuguese and Bengali teams. Read more about them here http://multilingual.tigweb.org/team.html. You can also read Farzana’s interview questions below (in English and Bengali).
1. When did you become involved with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team? What motivated you to become an online volunteer?
I joined with TakingITGlobal’s online volunteer team on November 2009. It was a great opportunity for me to be a part of global community as well as get connected with different networks, create new friends, sharing & learning ideas and views, know various cultures and explore myself and my culture to the young learners around the world.
2. What attracts you to your role as a volunteer?
I have more than 11 years working experience in my back home in the social service sector since I was a University student. These experiences made me feel good to be a change maker of the developing world and attract me to continue to my contribution as well, which I got from TakingITGlobal.
3. What have you learned from the experience so far?
Learning is always endless. I have learned a lot and sharpen my previous leanings as well, like:
- Team Coordination and organization
- Planning and reporting
- Performance evaluation of team members
- Communication skills in the development field
- Enhanced knowledge in the global issues like: culture, education, environment, globalization, Health, human rights, media, peace & conflict and technology, etc.
4. What advice would you give other young people out there interested in becoming online volunteers?
Here I would suggest for those young people who want to contribute to change the world but don’t find any scope, they can easily join with TIG and shear their ideas, views, experiences and contribute their time in volunteering with TIG and to become involved in global issues. They can be a part of the contributor of the changing world.
5. What are your overall thoughts on the experience?
Volunteering is the best and easy way to show respect and sympathy to the human being and it is also the best way to get involved, networking, learning and friendship.
