Description:
TITLE OF PROJECT: PIGLETS PRODUCTION TO
SUSTAIN HID/AIDS ORPHANS AND
AGEING PERSONS IN BAMBILI.

Background:
ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE.
Agriculture and Rural Development Promoters (AGRUDEP) was formed in March 2002 and officially registered as a Common Initiative Group (C.I.G.) in July 2005 with registration number NW/GP/30/05/9409 under law number 92/006/PM of 14 August 1992 relating to Common Initiative Groups and Cooperative Societies in Cameroon. It was formed by a group of youths in Bambili, Tubah Sub-Division of the North West Province of Cameroon in response to an increasing concern about the number of HIV/AIDS infected and affected persons, unemployment, delinquency among young girls, school dropouts and other community problems. The group has pursued a variety of projects including HIV/AIDS sensitization, literacy classes, talks on women’s health and childcare, youth empowerment and many others. The group has an executive of nine members and a membership of 59. All group members have committed themselves to the realization of this project.

JUSTIFICATION:
Following the event of various pandemics and health hazards including HIV/AIDS, malaria etc., it has been observed that many children are left without parents. Mostly the old grand parents take care of the orphans. From a day to day head count of deaths in a small rural village like Bambili with a population of about thirteen thousand nine hundred and thirty four (13,934) inhabitants; (an extract of 1986 census shows ten thousand (10.000) inhabitants with an increase rate of 2.81% approximately 3%) shows about 5 deaths/week.
According to hospital sources, HIV/AIDS prevalence rate rose from 9% in 1989 to 11% in Cameroon as a whole. Presently from Tubah Sub-Divisional Hospital and Bambili Integrated Health Center the number stands at 10.5%
As a result of this, the number of orphans is increasing and presently, we have identified ninety six (96) orphans in Bambili. More are yet to be identified with an increasing mortality trend of parents, as a result of HIV/AIDS, malaria, the number of orphans will continue to increase and if not handled immediately, the situation will get worst.
Some of these orphans find themselves in very desperate situations where they either drop out of school or lack food to eat. Most end up detached from their biological parents’ homes to become baby seaters housemates, gamblers, thieves, prostitutes, etc accompanied with its bad consequences like rural urban exodus, transmission of HIV/AIDS and other STIs.
The present living standard of an ordinary “Bambili man” is poor. The deceased HIV/AIDS parents left behind many orphans, thereby increasing the poor living standards.
They encounter the problem of lack of school needs, foodstuff, health care, clothing and other basic needs. There is increased need for sustainable empowerment of the orphans and ageing who take care of them. In this light, AGRUDEP believe that to embark in piglets production, the orphans and ageing care takers will be highly assisted in poverty alleviation, provide jobs and all the other odds highlighted above. The piglet production project will be presented in a technical bulletin with its cost and project projected.
