Description:
The YAC is a voluntary group of young people taking action to promote international development issues, child-centred development and children's rights issues. The current focus of the Youth Advisory Council is on HIV/AIDS and how it affects youth in Africa. The Council is working to raise awareness and knowledge of this important issue among youth.
Background:
Members of the YAC come from across Canada and share a passionate belief in helping others.
Objectives:
Our current objective is to help children affected by HIV/AIDS through fundraising and education aimed particularly at youth.
Milestones:
Activities the YAC has organized and participated in include:
An HIV/AIDS in Africa awareness working for Toronto youth held at City Hall in April 2004
A call to action letter written to Prime Minister Paul Martin about the need to do more to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic
Moderating UNICEF’s Voices of Youth web discussion for Lessons for Life with youth from over 20 countries
Meeting with government officials including Minister of State for Public Health, Dr. Carolyn Bennett about youth awareness
Developed an internet link with Ugandan HIV/AIDS youth groups
Participating in Canadian and international meetings on youth issues
Presentations to schools and communities
Hands of Hope Campaign
Travel to conferences in Norway, Brazil, Ottawa, and Uganda
