Nduka wrote about questionairre 1:AIDS is Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is caused by the human immuno deficiency virus (HIV). HIV is passed by semen, pre-ejaculatory fluid, vaginal fluids, blood and breast milk of HIV infected people. HIV begins to destroy cells that defend the body. Without the cells that are a part of the immune system, the body cannot defend itself from illness. AIDS occurs when the body's immune system has been severely damaged. At this point, a person with AIDS is vulnerable to life threatening infections and cancers. Most people infected with HIV look and feel healthy. The average length of time between exposure to the virus and onset of symptoms is 8-10 years. Because of the delay of the beginning of symptoms, many people may not even suspect that they are infected with HIV. What are the symptoms of HIV infection? A person with HIV infection or AIDS may experience symptoms of a particular condition or disease that their immune system is unable to resist. A person should see their health care provider if their symptoms are persistent, unexplainable and reoccuring. Anti-Retroviral Therapy refers to the drugs available for treatment of HIV infected individuals. These drugs are usually taken in combination and as part of a strict regimen with many patients expriencing difficult side effects. Because of these combination therapies, many individuals are living longer, healthier lives. As well, many individuals who were very ill now appear and feel healthy. However, the long-term outcome of these therapies is unknown at this time. THIS IS NOT A CURE. It is estimated that more than 60 million people live with HIV,with most of them from Sub-shahra Africa,Because of the confidentiality or anonymity of HIV tests, it is not known how many peole in the world are HIV+. Sexual Contact: Anal and Vaginal Intercourse: HIV is more likely to be transmitted by unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse than by other sexual activities. Anal intercourse is more likely to allow HIV transmission, because HIV can attach itself to cells in the lower rectum. HIV may be easier to transmit to the receptive partner than to the insertive partner. Oral Sex (oral-genital contact): The risk of acquiring HIV infection by performing oral sex on a man is uncertain. There may be some risk, but it is much lower than the risk of vaginal or anal intercourse. The chance of acquiring HIV by performing oral sex on a woman is not precisely known, but also seems small. Whether you are a woman or a man, the risk of contracting HIV by having oral sex performed on you seems extremely low. There is no chance of transmitting HIV through sexual activities that do not involve direct contact of semen, pre-ejaculatory fluid, vaginal secretions or blood. Touching, stroking, massage and masturbation, alone or with a partner, do not transmit HIV as long as the fluids mentioned previously do not come in contact with an opening, cut or sore (break in skin). Kissing: No case of HIV infection has been traced to exposure to saliva in any circumstance. If blood is present, there is a hypothetical risk of exposure. Blood Needle sharing: Blood infected with HIV may be transmitted when needles are shared. This can occur in IV drug use, anabolic steroid use, as well as other situations if needles are shared such as tattooing and ear piercing. Blood and blood product transfusions: HIV has been transmitted in blood and blood products used in the medical treatment of hemophilia, injuries and serious illness. However at this time the blood supply is safer than it has ever been. The combination of screening donors and testing blood has reduced the risk of acquiring HIV through blood transfusion. Accidents in health care: A small number of people have been infected with HIV in a health care setting. Usually they were infected as a result of injuries involving needles containing the blood of a person with HIV infection. Mother-to-Infant:Women who have HIV infection can transmit the virus to their babies, pre-birth or during delivery and possibly through breast milk. Drug therapy given to HIV+ mothers during pregnancy and to infants after birth reduces the possibility of transmission. HIV IS NOT TRANSMITTED BY CASUAL CONTACT:Repeated, carefully designed and monitored scientific studies prove that ther is no risk of transmitting HIV by sharing the same space, classroom, athletic or recreational facilities, sauna, swimming pool, bathroom, food, eating utensils, clothing, or books with someone who has HIV infection. Ordinary objects and surfaces used by people with HIV infection present no danger and need not be feared. HIV is not transmitted by coughing or sneezing. Neither animals nor insects can transmit HIV.

Abstaining from anal, vaginal or oral sexual intercourse provides protection against the sexual transmission of HIV.
For individuals who choose to have sexual intercourse, using a latex condom can provide excellent protection against the transmission of HIV. For this high level of protection, it is very important that the condom be used consistently and correctly. INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUTTING ON A CONDOM
Wait until the penis is erect to put on the condom.
Pinch the air out of the tip of the condom allowing for a reservoir that will hold the ejaculate. Unroll the condom carefully all the way down over the penis.
Use water-based lubricants such as KY Jelly, Wet, Astroglide, or other lubricants that say they may be used with latex condoms. Do not use hand lotions, Vaseline or other oil-based lubricants. After intercourse, withdraw the penis immediately, holding onto the rim of the condom to prevent spilling.
REMEMBER ALSO:
There is no conclusive evidence that nonoxynol- 9 provides additional protection against HIV. Birth control pills and other hormonal methods provide no protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Dental dams, plastic wrap or latex barriers made by cutting a non-lubricated condom can be used for oral/genital sex with a female. Avoid use of alcohol and other drugs during sexual activity. These substances can limit your ability to use the safer sex precautions listed above. They can also impair judgement and make communication with your partner difficult. Communication - know your partner. Discuss and use safer sex. Communication can help build strong caring relationships but communication alone is not enough to protect you. Use safer sex precautions with every partner. Avoid giving up safer sex as a way to show your love and commitment in a relationship. Safer sex practices will help you in a new relationship.
Never share a needle used by someone else.
Counseling and Testing:Testing determines exposure to HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) by isolating antibodies to HIV; it does not indicate whether a person has AIDS. In general, antibodies show up in the blood test from 3 to 6 months after exposure.
Counseling should always provide information about whether the test is anonymous (no records with personal identification kept) or confidential (a personal medical review). Counseling should also include the medical, legal and emotional issues involved in being tested.

Abgonta wrote: HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. When this virus attacks the body's immune system and renders it weak, the infected body becomes suceptible to multiple infections (asymtomatic deseases). The last stage of this immune degradation then leads to the wasting out of the body known as AIDS (Aquired Immune Defficiency Syndrom). This means the defficient immune system developes thus a series of symptoms. The body then can overcome this AIDS becuse it has no resistance anyloger to fight it since its immune system has been destroyed. Various drugs are coming up with the advance of technology to reduce the replication of HIV in the system and to prolong the lives of infected persons. At the bottom line, there is really yet no effective cure for the disease. This is often relative depending on the immune system of the infected person but generally, there is the the night sweating and fevers, persistent diarrhoe, body rashes, and many others.
Maria was a neighbor who always came to school late. I got to know the reason for her lateness one day. She always met Jude in his house before they both came to school. It got to me again that when she left school, she had another stop at Jude's place before going home finally. What they did together in Jude's house was alarming. My fiend Ernestine told me that they had unprotected sex so often almost every day. Jude is somebody I knew so well. He was that kind of person who had and eye for anything in skirts. He fooled around with almost all the free girls in our quarter. Maria took to no advice from some of us her mates on the issue of dropping her relationship with Jude. She only got to know what was happening when she fell ill one day. Suddenly, her skin was covered with rashes, she had a terrible dry cough swollen lumps in her ampit and neck, night fevers often accompanied with profuse sweating. Still she did not take to our advice of meeting a doctor or going for an HIV test, she preferred to go meet a fake native doctor in our neighborhood who promised to cure her off her illness....
This was already the symptoms of the disease she was now carrying in her system. Her system had been weaken by the HIV. These were all symtoms produced dure the reaction between the invading HIV and the white blood cells or antibodies in her lympth nodes. Well its probable that it could be cured at the ealy stage but looking at her stage, she could only be kept on anti-retroviral drugs that would reduce the replication of HIV and prolong her life. Yes and that would be active wisely. Taking he to a doctor would ensure that she be tested and kept on anti-retroviral drugs to solve her problem.
This is generally what I have been doing in my community and with my peer. I have given training serminars in many organisations and youth movements in my locality.
Thanks

The delivery of messages to the people at home is an unique approach to the problem. This is purely an individual behavioral tragedy and the book providers possible and easiest protecting practices deeply to individuals and become quite convinced for his own interest which all other media can never exposure so far. This is meeting the need of the time to the people at large. It builds a self-service orientation among the receivers. It
creates self-awareness and self supervise and reduces the need for outside interventions anymore. It is onetime services to get, self-propelled on one’s self-protection. The individuals and cohort receivers become equally aware of things, which they never got earlier. The receivers are psychologically and cognitively convinced of the prevention need for his own interest and trust upon the intervening agency / authority is grown self-Lesley without a bias.
The program creates a positive self aware on the total health management case like.
(1) Total STD/HIV/AIDS & its prevention practices.
(2) Total reproductive & sexual health management need.
(3) Total productive and effective manpower building on being health oriented.
(4) The self-awareness of health protection leads the community to set on its own leg in maintenance of health without any further outside support.
(5) A receiver of message is a perfect & complete individual to deal & behavior the sexual task in protective practices and self-ensuring his protection from infection.
(6) Human resource is made at all level and social and state liability to health need is reduced.
