This project seeks to enhance the quality of life of people with Spinal Cord Injuries and mobility disabilities. This will be done through working in four primary areas: 1. Products and services 2. Economic empowerment 3. Capacity 4. Rights
The project's stakeholders are: 1. People with disabilities (SCIs) 2. Funders and Donors 3. Beneficiaries
4. Governments i.e. Health Depts
5. INGOs & NGO
6. Faith Based Organizations and Corporates’
Background:
Governemnts' don't invest a lot into Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) rehabilitation because SCI victims' are said to live for atmost two years from the date of their injury.
Purpose: to promote the Rights of People with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCIs)and mobility disabilities.
Mission: to enhance the "Quality of life" of people with spinal cord injuries in Southern Africa and beyond.
Vision: to create a world that promotes everyone’s right to mobility & inclusion.
Objectives:
1. Capacity Building
a) Management SCIs
b) Counsel SCIs
c) Referral network training for SCIs
d) Fit for Life training for SCIs
e) Peer Group Training for SCIs
2. Economic Empowerment
a) Employment for SCIs
b) Income generation projects for SCIs
3. Access to Products & Services
a) Wheelchair assessment and prescription for SCIs
4. Rights
a) Advocate and lobby for disability rights
Milestones:
1. Capacity Building
a) Peer Group Training (PGT) program - run a PGT initiative for SCIs
b) Referral Netwrok Training (RNT) - run a basic but sound RNT initiative for SCIs
c) Fit for Life (FL) project - get each SCI on a FL course prior to counselling
d) Counselling - get all SCIs counselling as the basis of Rehab
e) Management - need to manage SCIs intensively to avoid pressure ulcers
f) Promote and teach SCIs their rights
2. Economic Empowerment
a) Mobilise the employment of SCIs through the Disability network
b) Provide/Make Credit available for SCIs to start business and investments
c) Develop skills & education for illiterate SCIs
3. Access to services
a) Assess all SCI case before issuing out any assist device to them
b) Prescribe the most appropriate assistive device that suits their needs
c) Promote rehab services to be easly accessed from anywhere in the provincial hospitals
4. Access to products
a) Provide a range of assistive devices
b) Source available sustainable options
