Title: Quality Schools: Student Perspectives
Location:
Categories: Education

Status: In Progress
Timeline: February 10 10 to April 30 10

Description:
AdvancED is the world\'s largest school accrediting organization serving 27,000 preK-12 public and nonpublic schools across the United States and in 65 countries. We are in the process of writing new quality standards for schools that will go into effect in 2012-13. All schools seeking accreditation through our organization must adhere to these standards. This project is intended to seek student input into what should be included in our new standards that will touch and impact 27,000 schools around the world.

Background:
AdvancED represents the unification of the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. Building on the over 100-year traditions of these accrediting agencies, AdvancED seeks to advance the quality of education worldwide through accreditation, research, and innovative products and services. Our aim is to ensure that all students are prepared for success today and in the future.

Objectives:
This project is intended to initiate discussions with and obtain input from students around the world on the characteristics of quality schools. We want to hear students\' perspectives on what quality schools look like and do. We want to know what students want schools to be doing to prepare them for success in life. What we learn from students will be integrated into our new accreditation standards which will impact thousands of schools around the world.

Milestones:
February - April, 2010 - Student Input into our Standards Development Process\r\nApril - August, 2010 - Standards Development\r\nOctober, 2010 - Adoption of our new standards with implementation scheduled for 2012-13

Needs:
We need student input on the following four questions:\r\n1. What knowledge and skills are most important to learn in school to prepare you for success later in life?\r\n2. What helps you learn? When are you most engaged in your learning?\r\n3. What does your ideal learning environment look like?\r\n4. What are the characteristics of high quality schools?
