Description:
Setting up of a community radiostation in Kenya with a democratic structure in order to involve the local people to help themselves.
it shall be a station run by the people and for the people. The radio will give a voice to the weak, help to teach people about their human rights, about illnesses and diseases such as HIV/Aids, how to protect themselves, talk about environment issues, corruption and much more.
everybody who shows interest can work for the station on a voluntary basis, help determine the program, run programmes/ interviews/ music shows on their own and even get elected into commitees to determine the way the station goes.
Background:
Kenya is one of the most affected african countries in which corruption dominates everyday life.
People don't know about their rights, can be arrested by the police for doing nothing.
While I was in Kenya, I was able to take a look behind the scenes. Togehter with an official sent by the german government, we confronted the District Commissioner with facts about development aid and found out, that nearly all money disappears and does not reach the intended recipients.
I found journalists as well who started a tiny newspaper - independent of the Kenyan state and already reporting about corruption, etc. With money I gave them, this first anti-corruption edition could be printed and sold in the city.
There is a chance of actually changing a lot with this. We found an excellent network of people, we just need more people to support and help with the whole project, to give tipps and promote it, and of course - money! :)
Objectives:
- find people who are willing to promote the project / find partners
- find people who have experience with radio-stations / journalism
- get funds / equipment
Milestones:
was in kenya twice, talked to ministry of information & communication, UNO, UNESCO, ...
founded NGO called Free Media Initiative for East Africa (see http://www.fmiea.org) - we will use for this project
brochure about to be printed (right now only in german though) to teach people about the project and start fundraising
contact with hamburg-kenyan NGO chawema e.v. - introduced the project on madarak day meeting and found many people interested in it. many want to help - study here in germany and will go back to kenya sometime.
Budget:
