i finally managed to update our membership application form and even translate it into english. so if any of you - beside TIG - want to join the NGO we will mainly use to realise this project, you are very welcome. membership is free of charge - donations can be made on a voluntary basis though.

very good news is, that finally we are accredited as being a charitable non-profit-organisation by the german tax office. -- we have already been registered since february but this add-on "charitable" means a lot here in germany.

it means, that people who donate money can (at least i know about germany) set off the donations against tax liability. furthermore we can now apply for help from a lot of other NGOs who are only dealing with charitable NGOs.

our brochure is about to be printed the middle of the week. i will be very happy to finally have something i can really hand to somebody, distribute to friends and people i know who are interested about the project.

as the project progresses and more and more details are worked out, we are thinking of starting to hit the media sometime soon. it might still be a little too early right now but it won't be long :)

to give all of you an update of what has happened in the meantime:

i stayed in kenya for about 2 weeks in march. i visited the ministry of information, united nations and we did some interviews with local people to find out whether they really want a station, what they want it for and whether they would actively participate in it.
the results were great! everyone loved it, brought forward many issues to discuss over the station and many were even volunteering of doing a program, doing some deejaying and so on.

we found some new members of our NGO (the free media initiative - take a look at the webpage and join if you like - http://www.fmiea.org) of even kenyans living in hamburg, germany. i was able to introduce the project on the meeting of madaraka day (independance day) of the german-kenyan club chawema e.v.

i found a lot of german and kenyan people interested of who some study here in germany and will then go back to kenya sometime. they did some redcross or HIV/aids projects down in kenya and would like to share ideas and work together with us closely. i was even able of talking to the vice-ambassador who arrived from berlin and who was very interested as well.

our new brochure in which we give people a deeper look into the project is about to be printed. we are planning to do some kind of info stand in the city sometime and then have a big meeting with all people interested in the project to discuss how we can proceed further.

we need to start fundraising now and that's a good thing that we will have this brochure soon. we calculated about EUR 20.000 (US $ 25.000) for the station which includes all the planning, seminars, necessary flights, hardware, antenna, computer and so on. as i said before, there is even a radio specialist here in germany who would come down with us to help setting everything up. of course at least the flight needs to be paid for him as well.

so much for now. please get back to me if you want to know anything more about the project. i will check this platform on a more regular basis now, i promise. still email might be quicker. (my adress is ben@wadewitz.de)

all the best to you and thanks for your interest and participation!!

a big sorry for moses and everyone else who was interested in the project and who i did not get back to. i was not using TIG for a longer time, didn't really know how to communicate over this platform since i did not see members email adresses and so on ... and i never saw this project listed anywhere either. i wonder how you found it ...

i will fly to kenya tonight to talk to some people, sort out thing, gather information about how to do this and that and try to find new partners ...

meanwhile the NGO has been successfully registered and we have a website at http://www.fmiea.org which is only german by now but will start growing soon.

there's been so many things happening. we talked to many people and the project is forming steadily.

i now have all the information about how to build and setup a radiostation including rough costs and everything. those people are even willing to come down to kenya to help setting up the station.

the day before yesterday, on friday the 20.1.06 we had our very first founding-meeting of the members of the "Free Media Initiative for East Africa (FMI)". the constitution which has been agreed and worked on with all the other members can be found in the documents section even though it is in german only.

on monday i will take all the things to the lawyer who is then - on wednesday - handing over all our things to the court. and if everything works well, we are going to be an NGO in about 2,5 weeks time.

then i will get an official account and start spreading out even further. there is a big german newspaper (called taz) who might write about us - but i wanna wait till all the NGO founding things are completed and we have our website and account.

there's so many things happening. it looks really great. i will meet with people specialised in content of radioprogramme-airing to start working out a timetable or something like that.

in march i will most likely be going back to kenya to talk to the journalists and find a possible spot for office and antenna.
