Ideas for Action: What can be done?

The Canadian Federal Government recently announced that $55 million of the previous year's budget for the Summer Career Placement Program, would be cut for the coming summer (2007). The expenditures for
Human Resources and Skills Development's Summer Career Placement Program has been cut in half for the coming summer- effectively eliminating 25,000 student jobs. This was done without public consultation, and with inadequate reasoning (that students will be able to find employment regardless- the quality of said employment, is not mentioned or considered in the revised budget plan). There is no doubt that this huge withdrawal of support will greatly inhibit a significant number of organizations- many NGOs and not-for-profits- in maintaining normal operation during the summer months and further minimize their opportunity to grow and increase their impact within the community.
In order to have change realized for the upcoming summer, we need immediate and effective action to start the process of reinstating the funds. Post ideas of action plans here: thoughts, comments- share your opinion with other members of the coalition, and those interested in learning more.

I think the first step may be to start researching the current job market. Before approaching the government it may be important to understand that current state of the market as it is turning more in the job seekers favour, and companies are going to find a harder time finding employees. This means that market may be better for youth at this time.
Secondly, perhaps we could plan out some actions we can take to assist youth in finding employment. Some ideas I currently have include:
- resume writing / interviewing / job searching workshops
- resume writing feedback
- partnering with hiring / recruiting firms
