what is sisterhood?

What is sisterhood?
I copied the question that i putted at the group because i think it is a intressting subject that can be discussed a lot.
I hope many of you will like to join this project and
share your thoughts and experiences on womens rights with us.
I am coming up with the first subject to discuss now but it dosnt mean that i am the only
one to come up with ideas, anyone who has something they want to discuss can post the subject here.
The first subject is directly connected to the name of the group; Sisterhood. I thought it could be a good place to start.
What does sisterhood mean to you? Is sisterhood important and why? Does
sisterhood exist in your country/city/ community? how can we work to make
sisterhood local and global? what can be hard parts about trying to create
sisterhood? Is women included in the frase brotherhood? is sisterhood the
same thing as feminism? why does not all women call them selfs feminists? Do
you? How can sisterhood create a more equal world? why dont we have a
equality between men and women today?
It is many questions and i dosnt mean that you have to answear all of them,
it is just to make you start thinking. Just write what ever that comes to
your mind. The last question is very big, and i am seeing it more as
something that we can think about in all the discussions we have, if we find
some kind of answear to that we can work to change the situation.

Tough question!

Hew, this is a difficult question, Paula.
You know, it sounds like St. Augustine "If no one asks me what time is, I know it. But if someone does ask me, I don't know what it is anymore".
This could sound lowly, but I think we are a sisterhood.
We are a group of girls (well, mainly women), different nationalities, with different hobbies and lives, though we have a common goal, which is to help, to safeguard, to protect not only our rights, but the whole womankind rights as well.
The next step is waiting for a male project-member ;-)

Sisterhood-What a concept!

I am very excited to see this discussion on sisterhood. However, I would just like to say that from my experience in South Africa, there are a number of very strong female individuals, but they are just individuals. In 1952, the women of South Africa were united in their efforts, but now, I do not believe that there is a culture of siterhood or unity anymore. People are very self interested-which is fine because capitalism encourages such behavior. However, I must say that very few women here would support other women.
This is very sad and very discouraging. However I hope that a culture of siterhood is very strong in other parts of the world.

That is a difficult question. I think that sisterhood is when women/girls band together and try to somehow make a difference, however small. Even if that difference is just being friends with people from different countries, setting differences aside and accepting their sisters as they are.
Friends that come from different countries are rare. I would really like to get to know you girls more and i think we can really get the message and meaning of sisterhood out to more people.

What an awesome topic!!

Hey wonderful women of the global community!!
I've been off of Taking IT Global for a long time, but I just got back on, and I am so excited to see that there is finally a strong and independent female community on the web!! And can I say that the question of sisterhood is such an important question, particularly I believe, in this post 9-11 global technology/global village world we are all living in now.
I believe sisterhood is about solidarity, and empathy. I believe sisterhood is about sharing and experiencing ideas that are historic in their context, and culturally important in their teachings.
I believe sisterhood is not so much an idea as an understanding of the uniqueness of each woman who is part of it, but also of the globally connectedness that sisterhood ultimately is.
Sisterhood is about learning from each other, learning from our mothers, sisters, friends, lovers, partners, aunts, grandmothers, and our daughters. It is generational and generation bridging.
Sisterhood is central to womanhood just as womanhood creates a space for sisterhood.
In solidarity!
