Wuhan city ,capital of Hubei province, which called “the town of one thousand " lakes, is famous for its lakes.
Being the trade centre for centuries and now a part of our country’s strategic policy “to accelerate the development of central China and promote the growth of the central China”, it meets a tough course to find a balance between economic development and environmental protection. Since the abundant water resources endowed by Yangtze River, Water issue becomes the fundamental matter the city faced. Though economic and protection of water has reinforced, rules and regulars consummate to some extent, there still are lots of work to do.
The” town of thousands lakes” was a wetland I modern society, but reduce to about 1/3 recent years, left 147 great and small lakes in total. Many unique visions are disappeared now. At present, main problem faced is the eutrophication, 51main lake all are disturbed by this problem to one degree or another---22 in medium and 29 in serious. South lake is among the worst situations.
The area is around 8.5 sq km, in Grade 5 now. fish dead a lot in the summer, and around it, there are many apartments under building, which makes the lake becomes smaller, there are also many factories, colleges (our University is the biggest college around the lake) and one hospital, which has a giant waste water discharged to the lake. Also vegetation around it has been largely destroyed and so does the biodiversity.

Our association has a began a systemic project for protecting wetland since 2001.it started with wetland ambassador in 2001 .All of these abtained a very good effect and highly reward. Since the South Lake played an important role in our city and we found it in desperate need of protection, we plan to take action …
We collaborated with local NGOs, government agencies and media to raise awareness on various themes - from species conservation and the cultural value of wetlands, to the effects of pollution, dams and irrigation projects on river systems. We were provided with a grant and training to help run their project.
