Location:

Status:

Timeline:
Ongoing
Description:
With the plethora of environmental problems hounding the earth, it's time to start living sustainably! The Green Itch helps you do just that, by giving you a range of carbon -neutral recycled paper products as green conscientious alternatives. rnrnWe believe that every little gesture for the environment can make a difference and we realize that the easiest way to do that is to integrate it in our daily lives. Yes, we want to earn a little extra on the side, but we also want to make an impact on society and show everyone that we do not need a drastic change in lifestyle just to be able to help the environment. We just need to be a little more conscious of our choices and a little more concerned with our surroundings and, then, everything else may follow.rnrnEverybody is invited to join in: whether you are an artist, a student, a political figure, a businessman -- The Green Itch has something for you. We invite you to live sustainably and leave a legacy!
Background:
Even with an Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (of 2000) in place, the Philippines continue to use uncontrolled open dumping and a series of controlled dump sites to dispose of its solid waste (Asian Development Bank 2003). Implementation of the law is slow, with the law being only good on "paper." Informal and private sector recycling exists, with scavenging forming a significant element of the activity. In the priority of recycling, paper is only third, with plastic and metal being first and second. Despite this, market demand for some recyclable materials is still unmatched by locally available supply.rnrnOne large paper company, for instance, has the capacity to buy all of the recyclable paper materials currently produced in Metro Manila, but only 10% of its requirements can currently be supplied.rnrnRecycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 mature trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, 2 barrels of oil, and 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Recycling paper instead of making it from new material generates 74 percent less air pollution and uses 50 percent less water (EPA 2008).rnrnThe Green Itch recognizes the increased need for paper recovery and for waste segregation in the Philippines. It taps on the potential of paper recycling as a crucial step in promoting waste segregation and achieving waste reduction in the country while being an opportunity for livelihood augmentation.
Objectives:
With The Green Itch, we wish to increase paper recovery rate in the Philippines and to promote proper waste segregation (if not all types of wastes, maybe starting with just paper) to each and every person that we reach. We hope that this small step helps in creating a more ecologically-sensitive Filipino nation, with the integration of green actions such as carbon-neutral recycling into the lifestyles of Filipinos.
Milestones:
The Green Itch Project holds paper recycling workshops, do collaborations with artists for its artist line products and for exhibits, and accept used paper donations from individuals or company. We hold paper recycling workshops at least once a month and try to hold an exhibit twice a year. Every month, we aim to have one featured artist (amateur or professional) design our products and sell these in our artist line.
Budget:
The Green Itch initial operating budget is just at $200 / month. This operating budget covers the only electrical equipment that we use to make paper pulp and the others are used for supplies, travel expenses (especially when we have talks at some schools), miscellaneous expenses (paper recycling workshops), food cost for volunteers.
Needs:
The Green Itch Project is in need of volunteers and, of course, funding for our operating expenses and eventually for our marketing and promotions online and offline.
