Description:
The Themba Trust has been operating two Boarding Schools, originally started for children of farmworkers in rural South Africa, for over 20 years. Now the time has come to refurbish, renovate and rebuild the facilities. The decision has been taken to do so on 100% Environmentally Friendly principles. Planning started in 2004, architectural drawings have been prepared since 2007 and now we are ready to start building! But we need help: funds and volunteers. This is a major project. But the exciting thing is, that if it can work at Themba, it can be copied anywhere else!
Background:
The Themba Trust was established in 1983 by a Lutheran Missionary in his personal capacity. He had been lobbying the Apartheid government to start a high school for children of farmworkers in South Africa for many years. In 1983 he got the permission to start such a school. Two years later the first class of the \'Sinethemba Secondary School\' started. This was a Boarding School for boys. Based on the amazing success of this school, a Boarding School for Girls was started in 1995. But now a new time has come: to prepare both schools for the 21st Century!
Objectives:
The aim is to bring the two current schools together and start a new High School, with a world-class Residential Campus. The objective is to grow leaders for Africa, based on Christian values, with a clear social consciousness and a strong commitment to saving and nurturing the environment. This school will be open to anyone, regardless of race or religion, but it will specifically aim to provide scholarships to young Africans from poor homes.
Milestones:
Our first Milestone was reached when in 2007 we managed to raise a donation for the architectural planning of the new eco-friendly facilities. This process is now nearing its end. Now, in June 2009, our next milestone will be to find a lending institution that will lend the money to start building. Also during 2009, the application for starting a new Private School will be lodged with the relevant government education authority. The dream is to open doors for the first new class in January 2010. The total project will take about 5 years, until 2014.
Budget:
This is a world-class facility and will cost US$150 million overall. But we will be raising funds brick by brick, square meter by square meter. In total, we will be looking at 30 000 square meters, each valued at about US$625.
