Description:
Three Dot Dash™ is a global initiative of the We Are Family Foundation® designed to recognize and support the efforts of Global Teen Leaders around the world who are actively working on projects that promote a more peaceful society by addressing issues related to basic human needs: food, water, health, shelter, safety and education.
Inspired by the late 13-year-old poet and peacemaker Mattie J.T. Stepanek, Three Dot Dash is an innovative year-round leadership and mentoring program that teaches teen leaders how to "tell their stories" effectively using various forms of media, current technology and distribution methods in order to accelerate their leadership potential, advance their projects, mobilize peers and amplify their work to broader audiences around the world to action.
Three Dot Dash creates a sustainable worldwide network of individuals, corporations and nonprofit organizations to further the efforts of young leaders by harnessing the power of media, mentoring, and social networking to foster public participation around the globe.
*
A Global Teen Leader (GTL) is a teen from anywhere in the world who is doing extraordinary work that helps meet the basic human needs – food, water, health, shelter, education and safety – thus creating a more peaceful society.
GTLs are chosen for their efforts to promote a more peaceful society by addressing issues related to the basic human needs of food, water, health, shelter, safety and education and then invited to participate in the yearlong Three Dot Dash initiative.
Three Dot Dash will kick-off each year with a weeklong summit entitled "Just Peace." The Just Peace Summit is designed to provide the tools GTLs need to further their work and amplify their messages globally.
The 2008 Three Dot Dash GTLs represent 18 different countries and five continents.

THREE DOT DASH - JUST PEACE SUMMIT
http://www.threedotdash.org/
Background:
The name Just Peace comes from our inspirations: Mattie J.T. Stepanek and his last book Just Peace: A Message of Hope.
The We Are Family Foundation (WAFF) was born in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and named after the world renowned hit song "We Are Family," written in 1979 for the successful pop group Sister Sledge by legendary songwriter/producer Nile Rodgers and his late music partner Bernard Edwards.
The We Are Family Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, was formed in 2002 with the mission to celebrate the vision of a global family by creating and supporting programs that inspire and educate people about mutual respect, understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity.

Mattie J.T. Stepanek.
Three Dot Dash™ was inspired by the late 13-year-old poet and peacemaker Mattie J.T. Stepanek.
Many people know about Mattie from his six New York Times best selling "Heartsongs" poetry books expressing universal messages of hope and peace. They may have seen one of his many inspiring interviews on Oprah or Larry King Live, or be familiar with his work as the National Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association as he suffered from Dysautonomic Mitochondrial Myopathy, a rare form of muscular dystrophy.
The We Are Family Foundation® (WAFF) first learned of then 11-year-old Mattie in 2002 and was so inspired by his story, message and spirit that he was chosen as the first We Are Family Peacemaker honoree. WAFF and Mattie shared visions of a global family and the theory that peace is possible. However, Mattie believed that in order to promote peace, one must be peaceful inside. And, in order for one to be peaceful inside, one must have his/her basic human needs met: food, water, health, shelter, safety and education.
Mattie's writings of hope and peace were carried internationally with the help of his mentors and public media figures including President Jimmy Carter, Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Maya Angelou and Larry King.
Mattie died in 2004. His last book, entitled Just Peace: A Message of Hope, written with Jimmy Carter, was published after his death and became WAFF's inspiration for Three Dot Dash. In his short 13 years, Mattie's visionary leadership affected millions worldwide and inspired a global "peace buzz" that will continue with Three Dot Dash.
Mattie was recently named by USA TODAY as one of 25 people in the last 25 years "who moved us" and who has had an indelible impact on the world.
Even though the future seems far away,
It is actually beginning right now.
And while we are living in the present,
We must celebrate life everyday.
Knowing that we are becoming history
With every word, every action, every moment.
Because we, today, are the history of tomorrow.
- Mattie J.T. Stepanek, 10 years old, 2000
