Status: In Progress
Timeline: October 15 07 to October 15 07

Description:
Timpir was conceived in 2004, under the name Panhom, with a vision to work with the people of South Sudan and the global community. Timpir aims to provide assistance and support in developing acceptable standards of education, health, social justice and equity for the people of South Sudan.

After 21 years of civil war in Sudan, the literacy rate in South Sudan is less than 30%, childhood mortality is 12% and more than 4 million Sudanese have been displaced from their homes. By involving local and international communities, Timpir strives to help the people of South Sudan achieve education, health care and human rights.
Timpir is an organisation that aims to work in all regions of South Sudan. We aim to assist as many people living in South Sudan as possible.

Background:
Timpir was formed in 2004, under the name Panhom, to address the following issues.
• The destruction of social structure that has occurred in South Sudan since the civil war broke out in 1983;
• The need for education, especially in the south of the country where more than 70% of the population is illiterate;
• The provision of education, for all, through involvement of local and international communities;
• To alleviate the suffering and chronic underdevelopment in South Sudan.

The people of South Sudan must have access to education regardless of sex, creed, tribe or political affiliation. They have a right to basic education, health care and human rights.

Timpir will work with the people of South Sudan and the global community to provide education and support to develop acceptable standards of education, social justice and equity for the people of South Sudan.

Objectives:
The objectives of Timpir:
• To increase access to education for the people of South Sudan.
• To improve teacher education and training in South Sudan.
• To provide facilities for education in South Sudan.
• To provide equal access for girls and boys to education in South Sudan.
• To promote gender equality.
• To provide peace and conflict resolution education for the people of South Sudan.
• To work toward a better standard of living in South Sudan.
• To interact with other national and international organizations in pursuit of these objectives.
• To work alongside the government of South Sudan, authorities, NGOs, Civil Society Organizations and other International Organizations that support education and peace in South Sudan.
• To educate the community in sanitation, hygiene and basic health care and practices.
• To conduct HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns.
• To seek funding to support these objectives.

Milestones:
Building of school
Timpir has assisted the local Wäramoth community to constructed a three classroom school. This school is now called Wäramoth Primary School in Wäramoth, Aweil region of Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan.

When two of our Board Members initially arrived in Wäramoth in January 2007, they were astounded to see an under-tree school run by three volunteer teachers who come from the local community. Students sit on the ground or on benches constructed of tree trunks. The teachers use ‘boards’ accidentally delivered by the UN in the form of pallets protecting food-drop parcels during famine times. There were no teachers or students resources. The school closed when it rains.

The school construction was discussed in more detail during a videoed consultation with the elders of the Wäramoth Community. It was agreed that as much of the construction as possible would be completed free of charge by members of the community whose children attend the school. In this way, the use of the sd434,000 (US$2170) donated by Timpir can be utilised for those resources most desperately needed. This has enabled the community to now build a three classroom school.

Panhom will further support the development of the school with the building of additional classrooms, provision of school resources and the training of teachers for the school.
Digging of a bore hole
Timpir has facilitated the digging of a bore hole in Wäramoth, Aweil region of Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan. This project was very generously sponsored by the Denton Family. Madäga (a nodding donkey water pump) was like a new Dinka greeting term. This project, like the school, was also be implemented in Wäramoth village. A village, like most villages in South Sudan, that was completely devastated by the war. During the 22 years of Civil war, natural water sources dried up. Previously, women from Wäramoth would walk for four hours (plus waiting time in the queue) each day in order to bring only 20Lt of water to their families for cooking, washing and drinking. This forces them to leave young children unattended at home for long periods so that the woman can walk faster while balancing a 20Lt jerry can of water on her head and possibly carrying an additional 10Lt in her hand. The digging of a more local bore hole in Wäramoth has allowed women to do other essential household chores, and remain with their children, while avoiding wastage of at least 6 hours a day in water collection.
Christmas Gifts
In February 2007, two of Timpir's Board members, William and Mel, travelled to South Sudan. During this time we implemented the highly successful Christmas Gift Program. A total of 21 goats, 19 school bags and 24 mosquito nets were donated to those families most in need living in the Aweil region of Bahr el Ghazal state in South Sudan.

One of the most challenging aspects of the program was identifying those families most in need, as the need of every family is so great. One goat was given to each family who was known by the Chief of the area not to have any livestock with the aim that the goats would breed, thereby providing the family with milk and an investment that builds with time. All of the 21 goats that were donated were female. Collecting all the donations was another challenge that took almost a week. We had to travel to several towns in the region to purchase the school bags, books, mosquito nets and goats.

Funnily enough, the most difficult things to purchase were pens and pencils which were a struggle to find at almost all of the markets. The program was a huge success and will be monitored with great interest over the coming year. Due to the fantastic response of donors in Australia as well as the immense need seen in the people of South Sudan, the Christmas Gift program will run again in 2007/2008 with the addition of blankets and bicycles to the list of gifts.

Birthing Kits
In February 2007, we delivered 200 birthing kits donated by Zonta International to traditional birth attendants in the Aweil region of South Sudan. These birthing kits help to provide a clean birthing site which may decrease the risk of maternal and infant death through infection. The birthing kits were received with much excitement and even a statement of “How do those people all the way over there (in Australia) know what we need here to deliver a baby!” The birth attendant indicated great interest in receiving more birthing kits, and as such it is hoped that we will be able to make this an ongoing project.
Teacher training program
In December 2007, Mel and William will once again travel to South Sudan. This time, as well as implementing Timpir’s Christmas Gift Program, they will also facilitate a 4 week intensive teacher training program. The purpose of this project is to equip teachers who are currently teaching voluntarily in local community schools with basic teaching skills to help them better provide education to the young people living in their local communities.

Budget:
The current project of a teacher training program will cost approximately $5000. This includes providing one meal per day to the participants as well as teaching resources.

Aditionally, Timpir is continually endeavouring to increase the resources in schools in South Sudan. Three classrooms have been built at one school at a cost of approximately $2500. This school now needs furnishing with desks and teaching resources. More classrooms and schools are also needed in the region.

Needs:
Donations are currently being requested to aid in the photocopying and transport of teacher training resources to South Sudan as well as to assist in covering the costs of providing one meal per day to the 100 attendants of the program.
