Description:
Turkish-Greek Civic Dialogue is a demonstration project organised by AEGEE (Association des Etats Generaux des Etudiants de L’Europe - European Students’ Forum) and AEGEE-Ankara and financed by the European Commission under the Civil Society Development Programme (CSDP).

The project was launched in the year 2000 and has included various activities organised in partnership non-governmental organisations from Turkey and Greece. All the relevant activities under the scope of the project have been realised within the framework of civic integration concept. The project comprised a series of instiution-building, networking and training activities.

Background:
Project Justification

Project Justification...our motivation as we started...
AEGEE, a non-profit association aiming at promoting human rights, democracy, mobility, equality in education and carrying out activities for removing prejudices, wants to take a pro-active role also in elimination of prejudices and problems between citizens of Greece and Turkey taking their roots from history. All the problems appeared in the past such as Cyprus issue, continental shelf claims, population exchange, minority rights and such kind of political issues resulted in misunderstandings and lack of communication between the two neighbouring countries. It is of pivotal importance to activate NGOs of both countries to act with a view to eliminate those prejudices and create an environment of mutual understanding and peace. We believe that the activities of NGOs in the grassroots will affect all the citizens and both governments. In this respect, in order to overcome the problem of lack of communication, we need to make researches and learn about each other’s history and culture. Especially in Turkey, civil society and non-governmental organisations are weaker than the ones in Europe. Both in Turkey and Greece, there is not sufficient interest, data and knowledge regarding the concept of civil society. For all these reasons, we desire to create and organise partnership projects with various NGOs of Turkey and Greece, making researches and surveys on civil society understanding and establishing an NGO database for both countries. We believe that, youth is a great dynamic in terms of conflict resolution which contributes in ensuring a peaceful dialogue between the two neighbouring countries and helping to promote and reflect this initiative to the whole civil society and governments.
