Nigeria Rising Hope!

Celebrating the heart of Africa,
I danced naked at the stadium
With the knowledge that I would never appreciate
Lots of love for my heritage.

I understood the popular songs
That children sang in the days
When women witnessed the taboos-
What men refused to witness in cold.

I glanced through the papers and saw,
I heard my peculiar nature was alive.
We heard many tales from Shakespeare,
Even the Macks of our time spoke.

In one day we were transformed
Into something serious.
One day, we turned the tables
And we found hate that troubled us.

Today, we cry and we hope
For tomorrow in the womb of the godless.
As mercy and necessity came calling
Nigeria arrived in the mercy of mercies

Awaken, world of plants and people.
It was unfortunate the business that occurred.
Yet the future still holds hope.
We survived because we lived.

Unity lived with hope;
Prosperity laughed at the stadium;
Education retreated within those realms;
A partnership was built that lasted.

Unite for Sight's Abia State, Nigeria chapter completed its Vision Health Education Program. The event taught the students and teachers of Margaret School in Umuahia, Abia State about eye anatomy, eye health, and ways to prevent blindness.

The Unite For Sight chapter's volunteers spoke of the importance of eating food rich in vitamin A and told pupils to avoid rough play in order to prevent eye problems. The Vision Health Education Program's participants were taught ways of detecting some eye infections and were also advised to seek medical treatment from an eye specialist to check for any eye injuries.

The program was a huge success, and both the teachers and students felt "happy and excited about what they had done". The participants were encouraged by the chapter's volunteers to spread the word about the importance of proper eye care to their friends and families. The teachers and students of the school requested sunglasses, which will be provided by the Unite For Sight nonprofit organization. The students also submitted their names for a pen pal exchange program with their American counterparts.

Mrs Nwaogbo the principal of one of the schools expressed satisifaction with the health education programme.

Henry Ekwuruke, the leader of the Nigerian Unite for Sight chapter, said "The program was very successful. We spent some two hours talking to the students and educating them. Some of them confessed to a lack of knowledge about eye health and encouraged us to do more, they were also surprised and amazed at some of the information and actions we put to them."

Unite For Sight® is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that empowers communities worldwide to improve eye health and eliminate preventable blindness. Local and visiting volunteers work with partner eye clinics to provide eye care in communities without previous access, with the goal of creating eye disease-free communities. Additionally, vision screening and education programs are implemented worldwide by volunteers working in ninety chapters established at universities in North America, Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
