BRAINSTORMING POSSIBILITIES FOR TOLERANCE PROJECT
Have looked at the blog about the Teaching Tolerance Project for Ugandan Schools but I have failed to get to know what is it all about. What is the project going to do with Ugandan schools? Shall it cover the whole Uganda or just parts of the country? Is the project going to be conducted by Uganda SPACE? How is Uganda SPACE going to involve in it? ''The project is estimated up to 10,000''. 10,000 schools? Or money? Or students? The propel deadline is May 15 2008.What does propel deadline mean? Is it the starting date? Or what? The United States will be in touch with school administrators in Uganda. The United states government? Group of people? Organization or what? Will the United States.....directly get in touch with school administrators or through organizations like Uganda SPACE?
I need more clarification on that so that we can move together on the same level. Consider sending the questioners soon, so that our group members can circulated them in schools if it needs that. Hear from you soon.
Target Goals
1, teaching Tolerance is a teacher education school program here in the United States. I would like to write a proposal. It can cover the schools you are working with now and then expand to the whole of Uganda although this is not necessary but it is worthy goal. I would like you to read some questions, and possibly circulate them to the schools Uganda Space targets. UGANDA SPACE will be involved as follow
• Be able to print more textbooks for the project, and get the motivation financially to operate
• “Propel deadline means the following. The projects need to be written down in proposal form at this time. I will be sending you these papers shortly but we have already discussed some of these in detail via email
• In order to have the United States involved in the project I need to be in touch with administrators and the non profits running the project or funding these. This can be done in letter and email. This will help Uganda space with loan distribution or at least this is what you and I are hoping for and be able to get more school supplies with the children
• Uganda space will not be in charge of the distribution of funds. There is enough start up funds for the programs to run. The more administrators we have working on the proposal the better the chances of getting funding and you can get more material to print books

Tony
I have trouble uploading documents and placing them into folders. If you go to the project pg you will see a folder there I have created called "Government Partnerships". I am trying to place the blogs I am writing there about various progress and budget papers on the project. Just trying to keep track of necessary papers here. We cannot loose these important documents as they will help us with future funding
Do the primary schools in this area have an art program? Perhaps we can tie art into some of the programs etc. I have found another grant and emailed necessary partnerships to secure sustainability of the press and the school partnership
The center web pg that I saw had a webpage do these schools that you work with have webpgs? If these do please also forward them to me as these need to be included in the proposal. Thank you. I will let you know of any and all information as it becomes available to me

LETTER FROM JOHN POWERS TO REBECCA LOHMAN 4/30/08
Hi Rebecca,
For some reason the email was returned from cpgraces@juno.com. I'm notorious for bad typing, but can't see what I've done wrong. So I'll copy the email here. (Sorry for the formatting issues) JP
Hello Rebecca,
I'm sorry I'm unfamiliar with TIG and didn't see your message until last
night. Last night Kasinja also asked me to leave the project. But I
thought I would go ahead and tell you about some of the things done with
Uganda SPACE. I'm very much in favor of this initiative. I believe
that the production of education materials in Uganda is a very
worthwhile initiative.
Kasinja came to Ned.com, a social network similar to TIG. He placed
discussions in several threads there about the book project. The
discussions received some interest, but it was difficult to follow the
multiple threads. I started a group for the project at Ned and you can
visit those threads here you
will note there are several pages.
I have tried to encourage Kasinja to explore online collaboration and
various online tools. Wikis might be especially useful for
collaboration in preparing texts. So with my urging Kasinja started a
Wiki which can be found here .
Many of the pages there are ones I made, Kasinja hasn't taken much
interest in the Wiki, but he is indeed the owner of it. We have also
talked about the role that blogs can play in forming online communities.
I understand the feeling of urgency he has about getting a computer
because so many of the group will graduate this semester. One of the
aspects of using online tools is the suggestion that members make
personal profile pages using Google Page Creator
.I pointed out that the profile pages
can be useful in job seeking. Also that using links pages on the Web
can be joined by links. To a certain extent fund raising is a numbers
game, and I tried to explain how the group can become more widely
visible by joining various Web pages created by links. We have also
discussed making a logo and making the various Web pages have a look
which identifies them as the project's. Google Page Creator is an easy
way to make Web pages.
I suggested that the group make a simple Web page which tells about the
group and offer links to the various places efforts are underway. I
haven't detected much interest in this. He said you would make a Web
page for them. When he told me that I said it's more important for
people to hear about the group in the words of the group members; to
which he replied that the online discussions with you would be enough.
In any case I've encouraged him to look at online creations as part of
their publishing portfolio.
In regards to fund raising there was discussion of costs and goals. One
of the goals was to produce 500 copies of a text, but a requirement of
this goal was a computer and printer. So there was a rough estimate of
cost; something between $1000 and $1200. I noted that fund raising that
amount would require a great deal of effort, especially if the intention
was to get online donations; i.e. a large number of people would have to
learn about the project. Not everyone who learns about a project is
motivated to donate. I also pointed out that successes build on success.
In discussions about costs, photocopying came up. I suggested that for
about $100 the group could photocopy 500 editions of a lesson. Among
the members of Ned, and Kasinja's existing network, it seemed realistic
that $100 could be raised via an online fund raising drive--we have also
discussed the use of fundraising widgets like ChipIn. One of the
members at Ned is Lars Hasselblad Torres the Owner of Peace Tiles. I
pointed to an online pbulication that Torres had made, just 4 pages;
view it here
.
There were several reasons that I wanted Kasinja to look at Torres'
publication, not the least of which is that it is published in PDF. One
aspect of their documents in Word is they are fairly complicated
graphically. Some of these complications will make printing them
difficult; eg. tables and illustrations which are not properly anchored,
eccentric type fonts, and page breaks that are confusing. One way to
make the documents easier to handle is for them to be in PDF. Torres's
booklet is also educationally sound.
Kasinja sent me 13 pages of a biology text to look at on as a possible
text for the proposed booklet. The text proved problematic. The
publication were intended to go to schools, but I was finding it
difficult to locate something of it to publish as a lesson booklet. I
wrote about my concerns at Ned
as well as cross
posting it at TIG. It looks like Kasinja has removed my blog at TIG.
In any case he did not respond to it. Evidently the post made him quite
angry and he really chewed me out last night when we chatted via Google
Talk. His reaction did not come as a complete surprise. Partly, I think
I anticipated it because Kasinja thinks in a very hierarchical way, but
online collaboration is very network centered. This idea of networking
is new to him. What I hadn't anticipated was his desire to sever ties
with me. I tried to point out that wasn't the best thing, at least
partly thinking that good relations at Ned were part of the premise of
the fund raising. Nevertheless, Kasinja was so angry that severing ties
was something he was adamant about .
I'll repeat that I think highly of this idea and admire Kasinja's vision
and willingness to pursue this cause. I don't want to get in the way.
And indeed, if there is any way that I can be helpful to you in this
regard, don't hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
John Powers
