Project:
We Are The Future - Addis Ababa

About  About
Title: We Are The Future - Addis Ababa
Location: Global
Categories: Peace & Conflict

Status: Completed
Timeline: Ongoing

Description:
Eighteen years after Quincy Jones initiated the world famous “We are the World” campaign, the Glocal Forum, in strategic partnership with the World Bank and the Quincy Jones Listen Up Foundation, launches a new campaign called “We are the Future” designed to secure a better future for children in conflict areas around the world.

The objective of the We are the Future (WAF) program is to set up child centers for children living in conflict areas and across the developing world, while building global city-to-city networks to support these centers. The We are the Future Child Centers will provide opportunities and services for children in the areas of education, health, nutrition, ICT, sports and the arts.

Six pilot WAF Centers are being established in:
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Asmara, Eritrea
Freetown, Sierra Leone
Kabul, Afghanistan
Kigali, Rwanda
Nablus, Palestine

Objectives:
The WAF Center is a one-floor building with appropriate facilities and a large garden located in the vicinity of the municipality in the Gulele Sub City. The building is in the process of being refurbished. It is next to the Kebebe Tsahai Orphanage which is owned by the municipality. The municipality has created a We Are the Future Advisory Board for Addis Ababa consisting of representatives for each WAF sector.
Ethiopia is one of the world’s five poorest countries
• Only 35% of Ethiopian children are enrolled in school (only one of twenty girls attend secondary school)
• There are 100.000 to 200.000 street children in Addis, among which 30,000 girls are child prostitutes
• 230,000 children aged 0-14 are living with HIV/AIDS and more than 1 million children are AIDS orphans
