Description:
‘Walemavu’ is the Swahili word for “disabled”; our mission is to offer assistance to disabled people in our community. Many disabled people have been abandoned by their families, friends, and the government and, therefore live in poverty with virtually no hope of employment.
We hope that through ‘Walemavu’ we will be able to offer assistance to many disabled people in our community; with your help we will be able to provide computers to help communication as well as wheelchairs, crutches, and calipers to improve personal mobility, At present ‘Walamavu’ is a small group that has been formed by young physically-challenged people but we are planning to expand our membership. Our hope is to empower disabled people in the community and enable them live in a productive and comfortable life like any other person. We highly encourage anyone who can contribute to join as soon as he or she can.
Background:
Most of the disabled young people in Mombasa have no jobs and our main project is to create a small business, run by disabled people, that will provide and income and security.
There are many sports fans in Kenya who are keen to watch British, European, and world football matches, but have no televisions. Already there are a number of video cafes in Mombasa but there is plenty of scope for more. Out plan is to build and operate a video café that will employ disabled young people. Following a successful initial café we will open further video and internet cafes.
Objectives:
To reduce poverty among the disabled young people.
Budget:
the budget for the first video café project is 240,000 Kenyan shillings (about £1,900).
