Description:
Community-Based Libraries and Information Technology, a non-government organization based in both Ghana and the United States, is seeking grant funding to support phase II of its Wireless Ghana project. CBLit’s Wireless Ghana project was developed and is being managed by the Apirede Community Resource Center to help to make Internet access in rural communities a reality.

The Wireless Ghana project is committed to the four goals set forth by CBLit:

• Promote a reading culture.

• Train rural schoolchildren and teachers in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

• Empower rural communities by providing access to information.

• Provide and use ICT to help increase direct participation in development and decision-making processes at local and national levels.

Background:
The Wireless Ghana project was initiated at the Apirede Resource Center in 2005 as a response to the local community’s requests for connectivity. The initial phase of the project, from April 2005 to August 2006, has connected ten nodes in the Akwapim Community Wireless Network, providing ten points of connectivity in the Akwapim North district of Ghana's Eastern Region.

The Wireless Ghana project is committed to the four goals set forth by CBLit:

Funding Considerations
The cost of implementing Phase II of the project is estimated at $72,000. Please contact us for
a detailed grant proposal and budget of the project*. Both monetary and in-kind donations are
well received.

Needs:
The first two phases of the Wireless Ghana project are laying the foundations for a nationwide
push toward an open society in Ghana. We are in the process of connecting an entire nation
together via the use of emerging technologies, and we need the help of all who share our
vision.
In the now complete Phase I of the project we have proved that a community wireless network
can and will flourish in rural parts of West Africa.
