Description:
We are proud to offer a small team program option in Ethiopia. This ten-week and eight-week program provides a unique opportunity for you to acquire new skills and apply existing experience to community development programs through a variety of exciting work projects. Youth Challenge International is partnered with Ethiopian non-governmental organization, Emmanuel Development Association (EDA: www.edaethiopia.org). With their head office in the capital city Addis Ababa, EDA also has regional offices throughout Ethiopia working mainly with marginalized children, youth and women in health and educational programs.

Group Program: After a brief orientation session with head-office staff in Addis Ababa, your team of Canadian volunteers travel to a more rural location to begin their field project activities. Volunteers live and work together with support from Canadian and EDA staff. Participants work alongside local staff to implement YCI’s program through workshops and community events. Although translation and interpretation are sometimes used in workshops, volunteers are encouraged to learn as much Amharic as possible before departure to improve their effectiveness on project. Canadian volunteers are involved in a variety of project activities related to improving the capacity of local youth and through life skills development and awareness-raising. As a volunteer in Ethiopia you may:

• Contribute to youth development training & after school programs. Topics may include English literacy, numeracy and life skills.
• Facilitate workshops to a variety of youth audiences and in some cases to peer educators. Topics are wide-ranging, from sexual reproductive health and family planning to leadership skills, sanitation, environmental issues and team building.
• Coordinate community events through sport and recreation as well as important dates from International Women’s Day to World AIDS day.
• Work with local youth groups including the environment and girls’ clubs to help facilitate weekly meetings and assist with projects.
This sustainable project relies on independent, creative and hard-working volunteers committed to hands-on and grassroots community development.
