Description:
NYouth Challenge International’s key partner in Central America, Reto Juvenil Internacional (RJI), is based in San Jose Costa Rica. This partnership began 20 years ago to bring support to rural communities in particular.

Located in the province of Matagalpa, in the region of Matiguas - the heart of the coffee and milk production - our joint program has objectives that include developing opportunities for economic development, the empowerment of local youth, and the improvement of health and education levels.

Environment and Education: Partnering with two local groups, the Local Development Association and ANIDES (Nicaraguan Sustainable Development Association), volunteers will create economic development opportunities for the communities in Matiguas and at the same time preserve key archeological areas. Volunteers will also implement projects in education and youth development to empower youth in leadership and life skills; as well as conduct community assessments to mobilize for action. Most local teachers in Nicaragua do not have a post-secondary education. Volunteers may also teach in the schools and develop better teaching methodology for local teachers.

Health: Along with education, nutrition is also a concern for the community. According to State of the Region report, iron deficiency anemia continues to be a public health problem in the region, especially among pre-school children. This nutritional deficiency affects more than 30% of the population in Nicaragua. Volunteers will work in activities related to agriculture and developing new technologies to produce vegetables and fruits, which can help to improve nutrition levels.
