Title: YCI-Project DestaNation
Location: Global

Status: In Progress
Timeline: January 1 00 to January 1 00

Description:
We came, we saw, what next?

Project DestaNation is a collaboration between former YCI volunteers
who, as participants in a community development project
co-administered by Youth Challenge International Canada and the
Emmanuel Development Association Ethiopia, lived and worked in the
Debre Sina, Ethiopia community and observed an immediate need for
housing for the area's many orphans, vulnerable children, and youth who
had lost their parents to disease, illness, HIV/AIDS, and other
plagues ravaging the region's poor. Located in the high-altitude
Amhara region of Ethiopia, Debre Sina can reach freezing temperatures
at night and during the rainy season is host to almost daily storms.
In these conditions the town's homeless children and youth can be
found sleeping outside, several children huddled together sharing one
blanket, beneath the awning of a building whose owner permits them to
be there. Many spend their days by the side of the town's main road,
hustling or begging from the travelers passing through. They are fed
by the scraps of other diner's remnants from the local hotels and
restaurants. These children have no parents or guardians and school is
not an option as their days are spent scavenging for a means of
survival, living hand to mouth. Alone in the world and completely
vulnerable to forces of nature, circumstance and those who wish to
take advantage of them, their futures are bleak. Despite these harsh
conditions, their spirits remain joyous and strong, and the optimistic
hope of childhood shines though their smiling faces.

Background:
"DestaNation" - a name derived from the Amharic word "desta," meaning
"happiness," will be a place where children with few opportunities can
come to receive their birthright as human beings; basic necessities of
life and human rights.

Objectives:
Project DestaNation aims to raise funds to construct a child and youth
shelter, where Debre Sina's homeless children, until age 18, will be
provided with healthy food and clean water, clothing, safe
accommodation, the opportunity to attend school, receive life-skills
training and learn an employable trade. In addition, the women’s
organizations within the community would be provided a meeting place
for gatherings and workshops, we hope to promote activity among
these existing groups.

Budget:
With the support of YCI, we plan to raise an initial sum of $2500 to construct this facility by September 2008. An additional $2500 will be required by January 2008 and another $5000 within the next year to ensure long term sustainability.

Needs:
We hope that you are interested in participating in project Desta-Nation (Desta meaning happiness in Amharic). This project is now at the fundraising stage and we need as many partners as possible. If you would like further information about fundraising or have input of any kind please e-mail us. We hope that you will show your support for this project and help us to continue making a difference in Debre Sina.
