Health issues are often times ignored because of the stigma attached to them. Mental illness is particularly overlooked either deemed as not a “real illness” in some cultures or typecast as being totally debilitating. No one wants to be labeled, judged or socially outcast because of something they can’t help. I believe through discussion some of the misconceptions or mystery surrounding health issues can be put aside.

Some celebrities have come forward and shared their health issues. I believe this is key to making issues open for discussion. Once a subject is in such a public realms a lot of media attention is put on it. Stars like Catherine-Zeta Jones and Jim Carrey have openly stated their health issues and as a consequence have raised awareness.

In Canada there are several organizations that aim to raise awareness on health issues. Some, which stood out to me, were:
The Mental Health Commission
http://www.mentalhealthcommission.ca/English/Pages/openingminds.aspx. This website clearly outlines what stigma is and discusses how to get the facts about mental illness.

Similarly The Canadian Mental Health Association http://www.ontario.cmha.ca/fact_sheets.asp?cID=2795 provides an explanation of stigma and offers plenty of information on Mental Illness within the workplace- http://www.mentalhealthworks.ca/ . This website also provides a list of resources relating to accessibility, legal issues, support programs and work/life balance.

Similar ideas are found elsewhere. For instance in England a new campaign sheds light on mental illness. Their campaign is called “Time to Change” and aims to ask the public “what are you afraid of?”. You can read more at

What working as a YHN means to me:

Working as a youth health navigator has by far been one of the most enriching experiences. Being able to work in two very different communities and work online has been amazing.

We also express ideas in a creative, original way. For instance taking a picture of a health issue and writing about it helps address key health issues in a relatable and candid way. Or creating an online blog post (like this!) where people can comment and share their ideas.

The ideas of youth are truly valued and used. Not only has it harnessed my communication skills and taught me about resources but also I feel it is now a part of who I am. When asking other Youth Health Navigators the same question: How has being a YHN influenced you? They give a similar answer- It is part of who they are.

Overall I would say being a yhn sheds light on issues that need to be addressed and also is a celebration of the strength of communities.
I’ve noticed now that I am aware of the skills needed to disseminate information to any community I’ve used them so frequently. Being a Youth Health Navigator becomes a second skin that sometimes you’re not even conscious of!

Andrea Yip (@andie86) shares her summary of #hcsmca’s special edition chat about youth health navigation.

Thanks to everyone for joining @colleen_young and the @Youth4Health team on March 24th for an engaging and lively tweet chat around youth health navigation! We were thrilled to hear that there was budding interest from the #hcsmca community for this type of dialogue and were happy to have the opportunity to share our experiences, ideas, and learnings from the project with tweeps new to the project, good friends, and #y4h supporters.
