Description:
APEPCY (AIDS Prevention Education Project for Chinese Youth) was launched as a project jointly by the China Charity Federation (CCF) and the Chinese Society of Education (CSE) in October 2006. Over a five-year period APEPCY will develop, implement and sponsor educational programs and activities regarding AIDS prevention and sexual health in 10,000 colleges, universities, vocational-and secondary schools in China. This equals 10% of the total number of schools for secondary and higher education in China. From 2006 to 2011 APEPCY will:
• Collect and summarize international and local HIV/AIDS prevention, education and research programs that have been successful. Using this knowledge, APEPCY will build education programs that suit local and educational settings and needs.
• develop and implement teacher training and knowledge exchange programs, an informational website, to support the activities of student organizations, to pursue community outreach education, to develop and edit educational materials, to develop and test pilot educational programs, and then to modify and implement these to suit the needs of colleges, universities, vocational schools and secondary schools in other regions.
• offer support for the development of AIDS prevention and sexual health education programs based on the needs in schools in marginalized, rural, and/or impoverished areas
APEPCY targets Chinese Youth, meaning students enrolled in institutions of higher education and in secondary, vocational, and technical schools and other institutes for higher education. Of the world's population in the age 10-24, 20% live in China.

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Education in 2005, there were 96,021 secondary, vocational and technical schools and institutes of higher education. Of these schools there are 62,486 junior schools with a total of 65,274,100 students. There are 31,532 high schools with 39,900,900 students and 2,273 universities and colleges with a total of 23 million students. APEPCY aims to reach 10% of these schools which equals approximately 125 million students.
